2024 Talent Data Tells Us These Four Things...
From economic pressures to the desire to build skills and ongoing battles to work from home, it’s an interesting time in the talent space.
So, what can the latest data tell us about how employees view growth and what companies should be doing?
In May, we sat down with Randstad RiseSmart's Toby Crane to talk through two of their recent reports:
And there are four big things every L&D, HR and people development pro needs to know.
1. Linear progression and pay are out, skills and work-life balance are in
“It's no longer that linear route of just looking upwards within an organisation, but people are looking at other areas within and outside an organisation that they can get involved in.?
“So this could be completely different to their day to day. It could be project work, for example, and by learning different skill sets and also understanding your transferable skills, it very much unlocks doors to these different areas and projects.” - Toby Crane.
2. 29% would quit a job that didn’t offer development opportunities
If people don’t feel like they’re developing, it’s natural that they’d get itchy feet.
Toby explained that development is the biggest reason people under 25 leave jobs and the second biggest for those over 25 (Deloitte).
L&D can ensure people don’t end up in this position by understanding current skills and what’s needed moving forward.
“This continual development brings the two parties together. If you have employees owning their own career and wanting to develop…

“And then understanding where they can get all those resources, having a real partnership with their internal L&D teams and having access to all the resources they need to be successful within the organisation.
“Then you're going to have a hugely engaged workforce, actively looking for opportunities within an organisation and looking to stay as well, which is that kind of perfect melting pot.” - Toby Crane.
3. Leaders are putting more emphasis on skills and career engagement in 2024
“From our research, 76 percent of leaders were saying they were putting more of an emphasis on skilling and career engagement or career development for 2024.
“Probably what we've been seeing happening as well in the last year is businesses taking a bit more of that ownership around the development of individuals…
"And you absolutely need a really functioning L&D team to communicate and articulate where people can be looking for their own development too.” - Toby Crane.
4. Career development happens in the context of people’s life
Randstad’s research revealed that for a lot of people, they’re not seeking career advancement because of circumstances in their lives outside of work.?
“When people hear career development, a lot of the time, people become just completely overwhelmed and they're thinking that's just an extra thing I've got to focus on.
“And to be honest with you, right now, I just want to do my day to day job and be successful in that. I haven’t got the brain power to focus on something additional, which is pushing my own career.” - Toby Crane.
