2024 NSW Local Government Election

2024 NSW Local Government Election

The 2024 NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) election was an interesting experience, and despite not getting the result, there are a few wins from the election campaign.

But first...

What's fair isn't really fair...

Initially excited to engage with 14 Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) for voter outreach, I found setting up meetings crucial, given the low Aboriginal voter turnout in NSWALC elections.

However, the challenge arose when most LALCs didn't respond or support my efforts, leaving me with around 4 councils agreeing to display flyers, and just one confirming its display.

So the lack of opportunity to speak directly with voters at LALCs was disappointing and this was especially disheartening as my opponents, long-time employees under Aboriginal Affairs NSW (which includes NSWALC), had decades of engagement with these communities, giving them a significant advantage.

And this experience led me to conclude that success in the 2024 NSW Aboriginal Land Council election likely hinges on a background in being a government bureaucrat / employee at Aboriginal Affairs, as it seems challenging to secure a fair chance to connect with voters during the campaign.

Gunnedah Shire Council | 2024 NSW Local Government elections

So even though the 2024 NSWALC election left a sour taste, I want to have another go...

And I believe I'll get a fairer go in the upcoming Gunnedah Shire Council election.

Because I'll have the opportunity to actually meet voters, and hopefully meet enough that want to see positive change.

Moreover, the Gunnedah Shire Council election represents a chance to advocate for transparent and fair electoral practices, ensuring every candidate receives equal opportunity to present their vision for the future.

And by fostering an open dialogue and building trust within the community, I believe we can achieve a more representative and responsive local government.

The Gunnedah Shire Council election is not just about me winning a Councillor seat; it's about setting a precedent for fairness, inclusivity and community engagement in local governance.

And with a focus on grassroots campaigning, I'm hopeful for a positive outcome (this time) and the opportunity to contribute to the betterment of Gunnedah.

It's time for change (version 2.0).
