In The MOC, December 27, 2023: Clear & Predictable Capacity Caps at America’s Seaports Need Addressing for Commercial & Security Reasons

By John D. McCown

Local governments and port authorities should not take actions that damage the national economy and national security. Related to the latter, note that if China invades Taiwan, the California ports will be the primary gateway through which military sealift occurs. If such an invasion were to occur at a time when those ports are full and in gridlock, the consequences would be dire. Indeed, such a condition could very well be a catalyst for China in the timing of such an invasion. The need for a national port strategy is more vital than ever.?

In The MOC, December 19, 2023: Sundowning the Oliver Hazard Perry-Class Frigate

Admiral James G. Foggo (ret.) MSC

In Part I of a two-part series, CMS Dean Admiral James G. Foggo (ret.) MSC argues in defense of the decommissioned Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates: “Since I can remember, the US Navy has always had frigates. Therefore, as a Fleet Commander, it was surprising that the Navy allowed the last of the active-duty Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates to decommission in 2015, without an on-contact replacement. These workhorses were at, or approaching, their 30-year hull life, and the Navy had made a decision in the early 2000s not to spend precious resources modernizing them to compete in the 21st century threat environment. As fast ships with long legs, capable of operating in consort with a carrier strike group or operating independently, this was a regrettable decision.”

The Admiral's Corner

In The Jerusalem Strategic Tribune , December 27, 2023: Next Steps in the Red Sea: Offense, Not Just Defense

Thus far, the Department of Defense has been circumspect about how Operation Prosperity Guardian will be executed. Presumably, warships will escort tankers, bulk carriers, and container ships through the Red Sea. What rules of engagement will be in effect? Will we go after those firing missiles and launching attack drones? One thing is certain: if we do not eliminate the source of these threats, they will continue. Until this point, there have been no deaths of civilian mariners: but our luck will eventually run out.? Definitive action on Houthi launch sites is unavoidable.? Let’s not delay the inevitable.?
