2024 Measures to Protect North Atlantic right whales

The North Atlantic right whale is one of the world's most endangered large whale species, with approximately 360 individuals remaining. (NOAA Fisheries)

The Government of Canada is implementing annual measures to safeguard the endangered North Atlantic right whale, protecting them from fishing gear entanglements and vessel strikes - the biggest threats to their survival. It was announced that in 2024, the Government of Canada will continue to:

  • Use adaptive closure protocols, such as seasonal and dynamic area closures for non-tended fixed-gear, trap and pot fisheries in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Bay of Fundy, Roseway Basin, and other areas, where and when right whales are visually or acoustically detected.
  • Apply gear marking requirements, lost gear reporting requirements and marine mammal disturbance reporting requirements
  • Apply vessel traffic management measures including speed restrictions throughout much of the Gulf of St. Lawrence to protect whales where they are detected, and an area restricted to vessels of over 13 metres in the southern GSL where right whales have been found to aggregate in larger numbers. This year, vessel traffic management measures begin as of April 17.
  • Finalize a National Whalesafe Gear Strategy, including next steps to operationalize on-demand fishing gear.

Canada and USA are together in a race against the decline and extinction of the NARW (North Atlantic Right Whale). But they are also putting in danger these of thousands of fisheries. 360 alive NARW may seem a lot,? But less than 60 breeding females are left ! Scientific authorities such as NOAA and WHOI have explained why the breeding females seem so few : they are the first victims of the fishing gear ropes, and so are their calves. Closure, however justified by the whales protection, are a mortal threat for thousands of fisheries and many communities, and especially First Nations communities. At ECOEASTEM we are proud to have developed a simple, innovative and cost effective solution to save the whales and the fisheries in Canada and the USA.
