My grandfather, Remo, migrated from Italy to Australia in the 1900s. Since then, the world has undergone significant changes. However, when contemplating my own "good life" and working towards it, I find inspiration in him. So as we eneter 2024, a time to reflect and think about the rituals, ceremonies, experiments and commitments we want to make I wanted to share a concept I have been working on to explore this. “The Good Life Service Guide in Remo's Garage” is a symbol of action. It is an artwork and tool for me that forms my good life to explore, inspire, and hold myself accountable to personal growth and well-being.
A vehicle service guide is a recommended timeline or mileage-based guideline provided by the vehicle manufacturer or experts. It details when specific maintenance tasks should be performed to keep the vehicle in optimal operating condition. The schedule is typically based on the vehicle's age and mileage. Similarly, I believe that even though humans are more complex than vehicles, there are fundamental rituals around self-care that can be applied.
- Physical Self-Care: Exercise: Regular physical activity can reduce anxiety and depression, improve mood, and boost self-esteem. Sleep: Quality sleep is essential for mental health. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule and ensuring 7-9 hours of sleep for most adults can enhance cognitive function and emotional regulation. Nutrition: A balanced diet with adequate nutrients significantly impacts mood and energy. Avoiding excessive caffeine and sugar, while increasing intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can promote better mental health.
- Emotional Self-Care: Boundaries: Setting and maintaining healthy boundaries in personal and professional relationships is crucial. Positive Affirmations: Replacing negative thoughts with positive affirmations can boost self-esteem and overall outlook. Journaling: Writing down feelings, thoughts, and experiences can be a therapeutic way to process emotions.
- Social Self-Care: Connect: Regular social interactions, even brief or online, can reduce feelings of isolation. Support Systems: Maintaining close personal ties with friends, family, or support groups can provide essential emotional support and a sense of belonging. Boundaries: Setting boundaries in social situations is critical to ensure one's well-being is not compromised by overextending oneself.
- Spiritual Self-Care: Meditation and Mindfulness: Practices that center and ground the mind can reduce stress and increase self-awareness. Nature: Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can have rejuvenating effects on the mind. Religious or Spiritual Practices: For those who find solace in them, religious or spiritual rituals, prayers, or community gatherings can be a source of comfort and guidance.
- Intellectual/Mental Self-Care: Learning: Engaging in activities that challenge the mind, such as reading, puzzles, or learning a new skill, can provide a sense of accomplishment and keep the brain active. Breaks: Taking regular breaks, especially during work or study, can prevent burnout and maintain mental clarity. Limiting Exposure: Reducing exposure to negative or distressing news, social media, or other stimuli when feeling overwhelmed can help maintain mental peace.
This framework and reflection on self-care rituals provide me with a structure to consider the frequency and quality of my self-care practices.
