2024: Embrace AI Leadership or Face Failure

Welcome to the first 2024 edition of Forward Thinking, CI&T’s monthly LinkedIn newsletter, bringing you key insights, analysis and opinion on digital trends impacting global business. This month Bob Wollheim explores the concept of AI-powered leadership, and it's significant importance in the year ahead.

I started a recent Fast Company article by saying, "If you, as a professional and more so as a leader, are not having thoughts, feelings, and concerns on how AI will affect your career, you are either isolated from all that is happening out there, or in complete denial or, maybe, you know something that nobody knows about AI. I believe AI will dramatically change work and even more, will change leadership."

I explore the idea that the most important thing leaders do (or should do) is to create real human connections and that AI is about enhancing connections and automating everything that can be automated, freeing time for more and better human connections.

I finished the article by saying, "Leadership is about human connections that we, as leaders, don’t do well and don't do enough. AI will automate the basic and repetitive tasks that consume most of our time, creating space for more human-centric activities, and will support us in making human connections much better. In most cases, we are the 'machines' replicating and repeating work, rather than the powerful human beings we can be."

You might disagree or have a different perspective, I appreciate that. In fact, with the pace things are changing, it is hard to predict what will happen next week.?

A simple new AI tool out there can change it all. I see that.

As a leader, one undeniable truth is that AI will not only reshape your role but also the way you operate. Perspectives vary; some envision a not-so-distant future where machines take the lead, while others believe this time is still far away. Some say agents will empower the human capacity - a point of view I like - while others believe the more human aspects of leadership won't be significantly affected by AI.

Futurology exercises exploring how AI will impact work and transform the way things unfold are inherently broad and dependent on a world perspective. I would also say they are closely related to an individual’s perspective of the world. The pessimists are more negative than ever now, while optimists are more excited than ever.

It's really hard to foresee the future, but at the same time so easy to know we are on the verge of an enormous disruption. Leadership is included in it. As a leader, instead of waiting to see what an AI leader will (or will not) be, my option is to co-create the future of leadership myself. What are you up to?

Indeed, the future of leadership with artificial intelligence promises to be a fascinating field and, at the same time, somewhat unknown. But let's face it: if so far the biggest AI decision we've had to make was choosing between ordering a pizza through a virtual assistant or manually over the phone, then, friends, we are just scratching the surface. Jokes aside, Bob Wollheim's vision in the article really hits a crucial point: AI has the potential to revolutionize the way we lead, not by replacing the human essence but by expanding our ability to connect, create, and, perhaps, even better understand the nuances of being "human" in the workplace. Here at CI&T, as we navigate these digital waters increasingly dominated by AI, we wonder: could AI eventually teach us to be better leaders? Or, perhaps, improve our joke-telling skills? ??

Insightful Article, enjoyed reading it... I'm more curious to know how AI will revolutionize our decision-making by 2025 and so on. AI-powered leadership is here to shape the future of our business landscape!
