?? We are putting the spotlight on Serap Müftüo?lu, our Global Steering Committee member based in Germany.

Serap Müftüo?lu, please tell us more about yourself:

I am a Turkish qualified lawyer and have 5 years of practical experience. My practice mainly focuses on construction and energy law and resolution of disputes through arbitration. I am currently pursuing my master’s studies at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin in International Dispute Resolution (IDR) LL.M. - Berlin program, and recently I have successfully defended my thesis where I explored the defense of force majeure in the realm of investment arbitration. As of July, I have started my internship at BODENHEIMER and I’m going to be a part of their team for 3 months.?

??What led you to the field of dispute resolution?

Initially, the advantageous sides of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms compared to litigation charmed me into the field. With hands-on experience as an international lawyer, I had the chance to observe that I personally enjoy working in this area of law more than other fields that I have worked in so far, such as M&A transactions or banking & finance. I see the field of dispute resolution as a thought-provoking plane, where I enjoy freedom in getting creative and articulating arguments based upon the present facts and evidence in the case.

??How did you get involved in CIArb and the CIArb YMG?

I learned CIArb through Bilge Müftüo?lu , who is the founding partner of Müftüo?lu Law Office , once she joined CIArb as a Member. While I was searching for the optimal way to become a part of the organization, I was lucky enough to come across to the call for applications for becoming a CIArb Young Members Group (YMG) Global Steering Committee member, and here I am!

??Can you share a personal or professional goal you would like to achieve soon?

In pursuance of my long-term target to act as an arbitrator, I realized the importance of tribunal secretary position’s importance in terms of its contribution to both legal and administrative skills. Accordingly, as a short-term goal, I would like to undertake my first tribunal secretary assignment in an arbitral proceeding.

??What do you hope to contribute to the CIArb YMG as a Global Steering Committee Member?

I am taking part in Education & Training Committee as well as the Adjudication & Mediation Committee. Currently, we are planning to conduct a number of webinars to address certain topical legal issues. Further, I wish to contribute to organization of a mentorship program to reach more young colleagues in terms of facilitating professional betterment via transfer of information as well as establishing networking opportunities.
