The 2024 AIA Gold Medal goes to David Lake and Ted Flato
David Leko and Ted Flato are the winners of the 2024 AIA Gold Medal. The The American Institute of Architects (AIA) highest annual honor, the medal recognizes professionals whose work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.
Lake and Flato, who established Lake|Flato Architects in 1984, which today has offices in San Antonio and Austin, received the award for their commitment to addressing complex and controversial environmental and socio-political issues, with a view to inclusiveness and easing the burden on our planet.
Lake’s and Flato’s projects
Both Texans and architecture graduates from Stanford University, Lake and Flato began their careers designing ranch houses in their home state. They soon established a reputation as architects and urban planners through numerous projects across a broad range of scales and types, in Texas and beyond.
Always at the forefront of sustainable design, Lake|Flato has distinguished itself for its dedication to creating healthy, sustainable, and inclusive designs inspired by nature. The firm’s work has received numerous awards, including 15 COTE Top Ten Awards, the recognition awarded by AIA’s Committee on the Environment.
