2024 Accelerate State of DevOps Report (DORA)

What’s the state of DevOps in 2024? Deloitte-sponsored 2024 Accelerate State of DevOps Report and upcoming webinar reveal how emerging technologies drive progress

By integrating and automating the work of software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to improve and shorten system development life cycles, DevOps can foster a more collaborative technical working environment. It’s also an approach that can enhance efficiency, reduce time to market, and help teams release software with greater frequency and stability.

The 2024 Accelerate State of DevOps Report, also known as the DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment) report, provides a comprehensive annual survey and study examining the state of DevOps practices across industries. Led by Google Cloud and numerous global contributors, including Deloitte, the DORA report has become synonymous with providing greater insights into how organizations can improve software delivery and overall business outcomes through more effective DevOps practices.?? ??

Most recently, the 10th annual DORA report tabulated responses from more than 39,000 global professionals to gauge what’s driving DevOps now and in the year ahead. In January 2025, colleagues from Deloitte and I will join Google Cloud’s Nathan Harvey to host the 2024 Accelerate State of DevOps Report Webinar to take an in-depth look at the DORA report findings and offer key strategies for putting them into practice to help enhance operations and gain a competitive edge.

As a precursor to that session and an extended introduction to the new report, let’s preview a few of the key findings and Deloitte’s perspective on what’s driving new opportunity in these areas: (1) artificial intelligence (AI), (2) software delivery, and (3) the future of platform engineering and how to amplify DevOps within the organization.

1.)????? AI: The catalyst for tomorrow's innovations

The artificial intelligence (AI) market is experiencing unprecedented growth, fueled by an escalating demand for more tailored models that enhance productivity, reduce costs, and uncover intricate insights. Concurrently, the importance of regulatory compliance and ethical considerations is intensifying, while the emphasis on sustainable AI technologies is poised to further revolutionize industries.

Enterprise spending and customization

Deloitte forecasted a significant 30% increase in enterprise spending on Generative AI (GenAI) in 2024. Organizations are anticipated to increasingly train GenAI models on their proprietary data to boost productivity, optimize costs, and extract complex insights—all while mitigating the risks associated with models trained on publicly available data. This strategic shift underscores the growing importance of data privacy and security in the AI landscape.

Regulation and compliance

Deloitte envisions a harmonious balance between regulatory compliance and innovation in the realm of GenAI. The European Union is expected to spearhead global regulatory efforts with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the forthcoming AI Act, addressing critical issues such as individual consent, data rectification, erasure, bias mitigation, and copyright usage. Clear and robust regulations are deemed essential for bolstering confidence among vendors, enterprise customers, and end users, thereby driving increased investment in generative AI technologies.

2.)????? Software delivery: Using Agile methods to drive productivity

The DORA report reveals that greater AI adoption can actually negatively impact software delivery performance through decreased delivery throughput and stability. In response, the software delivery market is starting to embrace agile and iterative methodologies that prioritize speed, transparency, and cost-efficiency. This is complemented by more advanced tools and automation, which can further streamline processes, reduce risks, and enhance collaboration to help organizations to stay competitive and adapt to changes.

Deloitte continues to refine its delivery methodologies by integrating insights from past project experiences. These approaches involve the creation of technology-specific playbooks that encompass new strategies, templates, accelerators, and tools. These resources are meticulously designed to:

Increase the speed of delivery: Streamlined processes and optimized workflows ensure that projects are completed more swiftly.

Improve collaboration: Enhanced communication and coordination among team members leads to more cohesive and efficient project execution.

Reduce risk and variability: Proactive risk management and standardized practices minimize uncertainties and inconsistencies.

Enhance progress and outcome transparency: Clear and consistent reporting mechanisms provide stakeholders with real-time visibility into project status and outcomes.

By leveraging these tailored methodologies, Deloitte helps ensure that each project can benefit from a wealth of accumulated knowledge and leading practices, which can ultimately drive better results for clients.

Next-generation delivery and automation model

Deloitte's next-generation delivery and automation model is designed to empower high-performing, distributed teams to collaborate effectively and boost productivity. Key features include:

Cutting-edge tools and accelerators: Utilizing the latest technological advancements to streamline processes and enhance efficiency.

Risk and cost reduction: Implementing strategies and tools that minimize potential risks and lower the total cost of ownership.

Enhanced agility in business operations: Adopting flexible and adaptive methodologies that allow for quick adjustments in response to changing business needs.

Increased speed to market: Accelerating the development and deployment of solutions to ensure that clients can capitalize on opportunities faster.?

3.)????? Platform engineering: The future resides in empowering developers

Platform engineering and developer experience (DevEx) are at the forefront of innovation as companies invest in self-service developer portals and holistic DevEx strategies. These efforts can further help organizations reduce friction, enhance efficiency, and attract top tech talent, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

DevEx:

Deloitte emphasizes improving the developer experience by streamlining processes, integrating responsibilities across the software lifecycle, and enhancing workflow management. This includes adopting practices such as continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, DevSecOps, and full-stack engineering.

Self-service developer portals:

Leading organizations have begun creating one-stop platforms for developers, where they can access source code repositories, onboarding information, documentation, tools, software development kits, and more. Gartner estimates that by 2025, 75% of organizations with platform teams will provide self-service developer portals to improve developer experiences and accelerate innovation2.

Of course, these insights only scratch the surface of findings in the latest DORA report. Join us on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, from noon to 1 p.m. ET to get the complete picture and see how excellence in software delivery and operational performance can drive your technology transformations.
