Is 2023 the year when AI takes over?

It's the first day of 2023, and it's time I took the plunge of starting a newsletter on LinkedIn, my preferred social media channel (until someone sets Twitter back to right). I will be writing regularly on the issue of marketing and communications in the Middle East. The aim is to get us all thinking about marcomms at its best, and how it can improve the perception of the region and its organizations.
I'm going to start off by talking about "Artificial Intelligence", and what this means for the industry (I've put AI in brackets as I don't count such tools as truly independent and unable to mimic human creativity).
All of the images for this newsletter have been created by the Midjourney AI tool. As you can see, they're pretty abstract. Such tools are only as good as the information fed into them and the previous examples that have been fed into these programs. And then there's also the ethics behind such tools. For example, where do the images used to train the program come from, and has consent been given? A good example of this is here, following an interview with the founder of Midjourney.

Other examples of AI tools include ChatGPT, which is an AI-based text generator that was released for public use in early December. Such tools will become increasingly useful for marketing and communications professionals. We will need to think through the ethical concerns of using such tools (the quality of ChatGPT has led many to worry about “AIgiarism” – or AI-assisted plagiarism). The other obvious question is, when will we see such tools being developed for the Arabic language and its various dialects? Understandably much of the focus is on the English language. Is anyone working on Arabic-language AI tools?
The irony of such AI tools is that it may, fingers crossed, help us to appreciate more human expertise. It's easy to fill "just-so" copy, but to write something that is truly moving still requires an expert writer. The same could be said of the difference between a human designer/illustrator and an AI tool like Midjourney.
I'd love to hear more from you and whether you're using AI tools. How are you dealing with the technical aspect of these tools (how is the learning curve), as well as the ethical questions. And what do your clients say? Let me know! And see you in a couple of weeks time.

1 年It is difficult to predict exactly when AI will be able to fully replace professional copywriters, as it depends on the continued development of AI technology and its capabilities. While AI is already able to generate coherent and grammatically correct text, it may not yet have the level of language understanding and ability to craft compelling and persuasive messages that is necessary for professional copywriting. Additionally, there are certain creative and strategic elements of copywriting that may be difficult for AI to replicate. However, it is possible that as AI technology continues to advance, it may be able to perform some tasks that are currently done by human copywriters, such as generating basic copy for certain types of marketing materials or proofreading for grammar and spelling errors. 1 年A very interesting first article. I believe the current challenges faced in the AI English would duplicate to other languages as well. The issue is in the adaptability and minimal creativity AI has to offer in our industry. But technology does miracles!
