2023 Year End LinkedIn Top Tips!

Happy Friday! Not too long until Christmas...are you set?

When it comes to LinkedIn, I've got you!!

Are you ready to see a recap of the most impactful LinkedIn updates to get you ready for 2024? ??

Stick the kettle on, grab a festive cuppa (baileys coffee for me) and let's go!

Read on for some top tips and some fabulous festive goodies....

? Festive Tip - Time to Reconnect

It’s the perfect time of the year for you to download your LinkedIn connections into a CSV file and browse through.

You are probably connected to some great people (clients, prospects, partners, suppliers, peers, potential collabs etc.) that you’ve forgotten about.

Especially if they don't post regular quality content.

Likewise, you may see some people that you want to disconnect with and that’s fine it's your network after all (they won’t get notified!).

It's the perfect time of the year to Marie Kondo and do a cleanse....

Some of you may need to do a cleanse before you can scale!

? Did you know you can also download LinkedIn posts and comments?

If you don't use a scheduler and are scratching your head for content ideas for 2024 you can turn your existing content into an archive!

? Profile Videos

Profile videos were removed on December 14th 2023!

It's a shame as people really get a sense of who you are when they see you speaking for a few seconds - they know whether you're for them or not.

They judge you in terms of likability and credibility.

It saves so much time wasting - DMs, emails, zoom calls / face to face....

All is not lost though ??

You can still make your video the first thing others see when they visit your Profile.

Simply share it as a LinkedIn post like I've done HERE and link it to the Featured section of your?Profile

We're curious as human beings and will click play if we see a video of you!!

? Personalised Connection Requests

LinkedIn are rolling out a limit on personalised connection requests worldwide for the free version. The days of organic reach are dwindling.

Maybe you've already noticed the restrictions on your account? I spotted I had 20 credits left a day or two ago. Anyone else?

You'll now be restricted to sending between 5 to 15 connection request notes each month. It's still in beta so it will vary from one account to another.

If you don't yet have the restriction on your account - make sure you're using the feature right now to make the most of it!

I've always been a fan of personalising invites. I consider it polite etiquette.

I'm Gen X and also an introvert / HSP and I want to know why people are reaching out to me. I'm not a mind reader....

My network is precious and I've spent a long time building it. I don't accept everyone so please make it easier for me to know if we're a right fit!

If it's not a win / win I won't be connecting with you.

On the flip side I find that most people who don't personalise are usually the ones that pitch slap you in the first or second message (human or bot!). Anyone else?

I get that LinkedIn want to control spam and automation. I also get that LinkedIn is a business and naturally want to encourage members to upgrade. It's fair....

BUT do you need to upgrade to Premium?

To avoid all of this you could simply upgrade but you don't need to - some ways around the restriction are:

  1. Ask for introductions on LinkedIn - if you want to connect with Mary at X and spot that John at Y knows her, drop John a line and ask for an introduction. LinkedIn is a social network after all. Ask how you can return the favour making it a win / win! An introduction will trump a non personalised invite any day of the year.
  2. Spotted someone you want to connect with? Comment on their content - whether it's on their personal profile or company page it will help you to stand out. You can then follow up with a non personalised invite and they should recognise you. Make your next connection message count!
  3. Check out groups - if you belong in the same group as someone you can send them a DM for free without being connected.
  4. Optimise your profile - if sending non-personalised connection requests this is now MORE important than ever before! Your profile works for you 24/7, people will judge you instantly on yours. Is the messaging clear? Is it customer centric? If not I've got a few goodies that can help if you scroll to the bottom (new year, new profile!) #justsaying

Don't upgrade to Premium if you've:

  • A rubbish LinkedIn profile
  • A rubbish LinkedIn company page (or none)
  • A rubbish network (not aligned to what you offer)
  • Zero content strategy
  • Zero tracking / nurturing / social selling strategy

In short, you can't polish a turd.

Upgrading to Premium does not make your profile "premium". You should get the free version of LinkedIn working before you consider any kind of paid upgrade.

Otherwise you're literally throwing money in the bin and I don't want that for you!

? AI - Chat GPT Prompt

There is no escaping AI eh...

I'm not a fan of automation in DMs however AI is a useful 'content assistant' for any type of online marketing. If you want to want to explore ChatGPT check out these 2 super useful LinkedIn prompts (you're welcome!)

  • soon I'm going to be asking you to to generate lots of content and ideas for my LinkedIn marketing strategy. Before I do, ask me 20 questions that'll help you understand what my business is and who my target audience is.
  • I’m [insert name] and I’m a [insert profession] working with [insert target audience]. I like to help/transform/create [insert 3-5 results]. My mission is to [insert your mission]. Generate me 30 content ideas that will be useful to my ideal client.

AI is the way of the future like social media was the way of the future 20+ years ago... neither are going away so best to keep in the loop!

? Content Tip - Year Review

Ready to sign off for 2023 and take a well earned Christmas break?

Could you do a post similar to this one?

Year end is always a great time to reflect (and get noticed)...

Do people know how to work with you? This post may give you inspiration!

It's one that I'll repurpose again and again....

P.S. You may recall that I did monthly breakdown articles / newsletters on LinkedIn changes for 3.5 years (2020/21/22 and some of 23). I've since pivoted to doing more general newsletters like this.

If you're considering pivoting in your business you may be interested in signing up for 'The Pivot Narratives Project' which will be taking place over January.

Every day a story of change will be featured and I'm talking in one about changing my ideal client and general direction in business. So many of us can feel like change is failure but it's not! It's all part of our journey.

You can learn more HERE

Thanks again to Caroline Wood for asking me to share my story ????

It's a great way to kick off 2024!

P.P.S. If you're still interested in monthly LinkedIn updates I recommend that you follow Lynnaire Johnston in New Zealand and Kevin D. Turner in the US. Both are absolutely AMAZING and keep me in the loop!

This is amazing, so helpful. Thank you Jen. I will be using the AI prompts. I sometimes use Chat GPT as a tool to get me started and usually end up re-writing it all, so I need to get better with my prompts and I love canva!

Thanks for sharing your story Jen!
