2023 Wrapped: What Happened in the Tech Industry this Year??

2023 has proven to be a turbulent year in the technology industry. We saw huge advancements in AI, finance, and quantum computing, as well as breakthroughs in the metaverse and e-commerce to reshape social interactions and consumer experiences. However, despite these advancements, cybersecurity breaches continued to persist, exposing critical data, ethical dilemmas around the use of AI surfaced and privacy concerns continued to escalate regarding data misuse.?

AI has continued to be a hot topic this year, with companies such as Google launching their most capable AI model yet and AWS announcing their AI tool - Amazon Q - to reimagine the future of work. OpenAI has continued to be the talk of the industry despite having had a rocky few weeks back in November with the ousting and reinstatement of CEO, Sam Altman, as ChatGPT turns one.?

Google Unveils Gemini, its Largest and Most Capable AI Model

谷歌 recently announced the much-anticipated launch of Gemini, its largest and most capable AI model. According to Google, Gemini has sophisticated multi-modal capabilities, being able to master human-style conversations, language and content, as well as understand and interpret images, code, drive data and analytics, and be used by developers to create new AI apps and APIs.

Sam Altman Reinstated as OpenAI CEO After Weekend of Turmoil

After a turbulent few days in the AI sector, Sam Altman returned to OpenAI as CEO, after being ousted by the company’s board of directors. The decision for him to return came after the company’s workforce of 750 signed an open letter threatening to leave the organisation unless the board reinstated Altman and then resign themselves afterward.

The AI Safety Debate: Proposed EU AI Act Guidelines Released

The European Union (EU) has released its initial proposals for the EU AI Act, which aims to see all types of AI developed and deployed responsibly. The draft regulations aim to ensure that AI systems are safe and respect the rights of people, in addition to giving out fines for those who break the new rules.
