2023, what a year!
CAS course on Normal and Superconducting Magnets for accelerators in Austria

2023, what a year!

From Power coupling and matching to Beam loading. From Computational tools to High beta cavities. From Hysteresis and dynamic effects in SC magnets to Magnets for medical applications. 2023 was full !!!!

“Particle physics is unreasonable. It makes unreasonable demands on technology. And when those technologies, those inventions, those innovations happen, they spread out into the economy, and they generate a huge impact.” John Womersley, former CEO of STFC (UK)

In 2023, we offered two popular courses on RF and Magnets, which had a waiting list for applicants due to their relevance to the topics.

Introduction to accelerator Physics in Santa Susanna, Spain
CAS on Radio-frequency (RF) for Accelerators, Germany
CAS, CERN Accelerator School, Normal and Superconducting Magnets, Austria 2023

Three hundred eighty-nine students, lecturers, and professionals participated in the courses across three locations in Germany, Spain, and Austria. The courses aimed to share knowledge and expertise on accelerator physics and technology with member states, participants and professionals worldwide. We've strengthened the collaboration with Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin , ALBA Synchrotron and MedAustron for the organisation of our courses, extending the collaboration with Technische Universit?t Wien , CIEMAT , University of Southampton.

We are pleased to announce that new locations for 2024 are confirmed, and some courses are already open for registration.

AND HAPPY NEW YEAR 2024

CAS 40 Anniversary

The CAS team had a busy year organising the courses, collecting the proceedings and reviewing the planning for the following years.

The year 2023 was quite special for the CERN Accelerator School as it celebrates 40 years of existence.

We've reviewed our history with a series of articles and the digitalisation of historical documents and pictures like the one below.

The spirit of collaboration and knowledge sharing is at the school's core, and we would not celebrate without the CERN community.

This spirit is why we also organised a CAS week in September close to one of the main Restaurant at CERN, culminating with two concerts on the lawn during lunchtime with the collaboration of the CERN Music Club. We also set up a selfie corner for the CERN community and a screen with historical pictures and information about CAS history.

CERN participants had also the opportunity to gather together and participate in the celebrations.

After this fantastic year, we will bring together the core of the school, our lecturers, hands-on professionals and collaborators at the very place where it all began - the main auditorium at CERN.

At an official ceremony on January 19th, we will reflect on the school's history, accomplishments, and future while sharing amusing stories and anecdotes.

And talking about anecdotes, did you know?

28% of the research in physics between 1939 and 2009 has been influenced by accelerator science and on average accelerator science contributed to a Nobel Prize for Physics every 2.9 years.
