Is 2023 a turning point for global sustainability?

As we approach the end of 2023, it is clear that the world's sustainability efforts have reached a tipping point.?Despite the ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement, we're facing a harsh reality: the Earth's temperature has alarmingly risen by over 2°C. But hope isn't lost yet. Countries like Sweden, Iceland, and Portugal are making groundbreaking strides towards sustainability. This newsletter takes you through the urgent challenges and inspiring successes in our global fight against climate change.?

The Paris Agreement - a glimmer of hope??

Back in 2015, the world united to sign the Paris Agreement, which set ambitious targets aimed at limiting global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels by the year 2100. To limit global warming to just 1.5°C, as the Paris Agreement recommends, we must cut emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve a net-zero emissions state by 2050. As of now, some progress has been made. ?

After eight years, the Paris Agreement is advancing in its fight against climate change. Some High-Income Countries (HIC) have stepped up their efforts to reduce emissions, even though they are not among the biggest polluters. HIC has also made some headway in funding climate projects, but they haven't quite reached the $100 billion target. The adoption of clean energy technologies is spreading, although slowly.?

However, there's still a lot more that needs to be done on a global scale to address climate change effectively. We must redouble our efforts in reducing emissions, securing funding for climate projects, and advancing technology. We must take decisive action in this decade to bring about meaningful change. ?

Climate change and reaching critical temperatures?

While we see promising advancements under the Paris Agreement, the broader picture of climate change presents a mixed reality. In 2023, we are faced with worrying statistics. Unless urgent and substantial action is taken, by 2030 our planet will exceed the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement.??

But the dark truth lies in the consequences of inaction. On 17 November, the Earth's average temperature was 2.06°C warmer than before the industrial era. According to Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), this is the first time we have crossed the 2 degrees Celsius threshold, which is a critically serious event.?

Recent heatwaves in parts of India and Australia, with temperatures exceeding 50°C, underscore the urgency of taking action. These events have served as a reminder of the need for urgent and sustained action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.?

Leading the way in sustainability?

Despite the daunting global realities, there is an upside to sustainable progress. In 2023, certain countries continue to inspire with their achievements.??

There are few success stories. For example, Sweden's ambitious target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045 has seen significant advancements, with a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 1990. Furthermore, Iceland, harnessing its geothermal energy potential, now generates nearly 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.?

Another example worth mentioning is Portugal, as it recently broke the world record for energy production by using only renewable energy for six whole days. The country aims to produce 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, setting a remarkable goal. Portugal's Prime Minister António Costa recently stated that the country is creating the conditions to bring the target of being carbon-neutral forward, from 2050 to 2045 through progress in public transportation, hydrogen, and the end of coal-fueled power stations. He shared: "The country is in a condition to set this new target, as first of all, in two years we managed to decommission our coal-fueled power stations."?

?These nations demonstrate that sustainability is attainable with unwavering dedication and innovative policies.?

The Takeaway

As 2023 unfolds, the message is clear: urgent action is needed in the face of climate change. The progress under the Paris Agreement and in leading countries like Sweden, Iceland, and Portugal is encouraging, but there's still a long way to go. Each of us has a role in this journey toward sustainability. It's time to embrace renewable energy, support sustainable policies, and make eco-conscious choices in our daily lives.??
