2023 Trend Watch
Happy 2023 folks! I recently launched a blog where I will share thoughts on economic trends, tech, M&A, local journalism, and my various business ventures - follow along here. Below is an excerpt from my first post of 2023:
As we roll into 2023, I want to share some key trends that I’m watching and thinking about. My reason for sharing? To hear from and learn from you.?Without further adieu, here are a few trends I’m watching and thinking about in 2023:
#1) The economy, stupid.?Interest rates are on the rise, consumers are illiquid, in 2022 the US stock market had its worst since 2008, the world is filled with geopolitical risk (Russia v. Ukraine, China v. Taiwan, etc.), and energy costs and inflation are still on the rise at home and abroad.
#2)?We live in a world where leaders (political, business, etc.) aren’t held accountable when the narratives they push are divorced from reality.?The result has been largely turmoil and division in the US, where it’s become increasingly clear it is difficult for leaders at all levels to address some of the major issues we face locally and nationally (skyrocketing crime, illegal immigration, geopolitical threats from China, global competitiveness, etc.). David Sacks (one of my favorite thinkers) recently opined that,?“The media is the prism through which reality is refracted and if it’s not giving an accurate representation of the world we can’t begin to solve our problems.”?I believe Sacks is spot-on.?Key questions I’m exploring in this area:

#3)?The Silver Tsunami!?Approximately 15.5% (12m) of the 77 million baby boomers in the United States hold an ownership stake in a privately held business. It is estimated these assets are collectively worth $10 trillion. As the boomer generation ages, and approximately 10,000 retire each day the entire generation hit the traditional retirement age, 65 by the 2030s. This trend presents a large opportunity for younger entrepreneurs to acquire these assets in transition over the next decade. As a millennial entrepreneur who has founded one business and acquired another business, I’ve learned I prefer to do the latter.
What trends are you following in 2023??Where do we share interests? Where do we agree or disagree??I’m interested in learning from you.?Drop a comment below,?chat on twitter?or shoot me an email. Wishing you a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year! – Matt
