After what feels to me like a long absence, I’m back with something I’m pretty proud of finally completing.
How do your retirement concerns compare to the common ones?
As some of you might remember, last year around this time I was conducting a survey of Thoughts & Attitudes on Retirement. I always planned to report on the results but that devil procrastination and life got in the way. So today, I’m very pleased to release 5 Common Concerns about Retirement and Smart Suggestions to Solve Them, a white paper that presents key findings of the survey and actionable ideas on how individuals can address the five concerns.

The #1 thing survey respondents were concerned about losing in retirement is a sense of purpose.
Most people intuitively understand the importance of having a sense of purpose. However, the concern about losing it in retirement suggests many see work as creating that purpose, instead of work being just one expression of their life’s overall purpose.

?We all need to feel that our life matters. That’s what gives it meaning. And yet, few of us think very much about our life’s enduring purpose. Instead, life literally gets in the way. We end up associating purpose with the things we do: getting an education, pursuing a career, raising a family, and so on. Then, we wonder what will give our lives meaning when we’ve done all those things and it’s time to move on?
?Many people just get busy again. Find some hobbies, spend time with the grandkids, play pickleball or golf, volunteer, travel… There are a million things to do! But after a while, the busy life may start to feel less and less meaningful — the busy-ness just a distraction from boredom. When that happens, it’s time to set aside time to discover your purpose and let that drive every aspect of your life going forward. The journey to find meaning may be challenging at the outset, but it will ultimately bring you to a place of deeper fulfillment.
?Being “on purpose” matters because it helps us carry on when the going gets tough, or we face difficult, complex, or emotionally charged decisions, or we’re just plain scared of what’s next.

5 个月Thanks so much for this! It's great to see the research compiled in this way. Purpose is essential to a fulfilling human experience. And, it is important to reflect upon what that really means to each individual. Societal conditioning often links our sense of purpose to things that are actually not aligned with our deepest truth or most authentic self. What are the ways in which we see the sense of purpose changing in aging adults?
