This year, Griffith Institute for Tourism (GIFT) academics and PhD researchers, covered the latest tourism trends and more, with research topics ranging from strategies to persuade tourists to use fewer resources, the future of rural tourism and AI that mines your online guest reviews.
With the largest group of tourism PhD candidates in the country, we’re incredibly proud of the dedication and energy shown by our members, in forging the way forward in areas that matter most to our industry.
Current research including surfing sustainability, right here on the Gold Coast, by previous ESPN sports journalist, now Griffith University PhD Candidate, Tiago Brant - and multi-skilled professional Vanessa Taveras-Dalmau, building the future of regenerative tourism with Noosa’s local council, takes us into the new year with a focus on what’s ahead and what we will be leaving behind for future generations.
With travelers seeking unique, off the beaten path experiences, Dr Putu Devi Rosalina’s research on rural tourism, shows its relevant significance, presenting the need for sustainable resources, including cultural experiences with local hosts.
Aviation’s importance in developing rural economic hubs in particular, was highlighted within the work of the future of aviation scholars Bruno Oliveira and Renan Oliveira – exploring the psychology behind flight delays and smarter flight paths – taking us behind the scenes of Airline Network Optimisation.
Experienced academics like Dr Yawei Jiang, a leading crisis and disaster management expert, reminded us of the importance of ensuring we plan and remain strong, supporting one another and using the learned experiences from the past to better prepare for the next crisis.
In today’s world, future preparations can no longer be discussed, without considering the use of AI. Areas both academics Dr Ali Ahani and Dr Truc Le are leading the way in. Ali having created a framework that uses AI to mine your online guest reviews to suggest future marketing strategy and Truc, leading a major global AI integration project with leading Vietnamese Hotel Group – VinPearl.
The world of events and sports digital media, live streaming and the impacts on athletes, is ever evolving and an area Griffith University lecturer Dr Sarah Wymer is incredibly passionate about – always developing and bringing her students that best new insights from collaborations with academics across the world.
Seeing PhD candidates earning their doctoral degrees and adopting the title 'Dr.' is immensely rewarding. They not only contribute to our diverse university community but also to our many valued industry partners that provide our vital real-world links.
