2023 Review
2024 promises to be an exciting year. We have AI opportunities to pursue and AI downsides to make sure we avoid. It makes sense to focus on what’s to come, not on water under the bridge.
But just in case you have not kept up with HackerOne or me in a while, here is a 2023 summary of my public thoughts and statements. Enjoy! I will welcome all your comments and questions, and especially your contradicting arguments and statements.
HACKERONE BLOG POSTINGS
Here you will find all my HackerOne blog postings: https://www.hackerone.com/from-the-ceo
I will highlight one of them for you: ”Maintaining the Intelligence Edge in Cybersecurity” which discusses cybersecurity and AI. The blog posting also celebrates the fantastic milestone of $300 million paid in hacker rewards. https://www.hackerone.com/ceo/maintaining-intelligence-edge-cybersecurity
A guest column on ethical hacking by me in the Security magazine: https://www.securitymagazine.com/articles/99798-why-this-moment-in-cybersecurity-calls-for-embracing-hackers
And I will also highlight a terrific blog posting I did not write myself. It was written by Phil Venables, CISO of Google Cloud and board member of HackerOne. If you read nothing else, read this one: https://www.philvenables.com/post/bug-bounty-programs
PODCASTS
Venture investor Shomik Ghosh hosts a terrific podcast where I had the honor to be his guest in November of 2023. This conversation about disruptive startups turned out wonderfully. https://shomik.substack.com/p/26-marten-mickos-ceo-hackerone-and
PRESS INTERVIEWS
I was delighted to see myself on this list of top CEOs in San Francisco: https://thegreatentrepreneurs.com/the-top-50-business-leaders-of-san-francisco-for-2023/
This interview by Jyoti Bansal received much praise so I will include it although it technically is from the end of 2022: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/ceo-rapidfire-hackerone-m%C3%A5rten-mickos-talks-purpose-schools-bansal/
Leading later-stage VC Institutional Venture Partners interviewed me about leadership and building businesses: https://www.ivp.com/content/undaunted-leadership-a-conversation-with-marten-mickos-ceo-of-hackerone/
This interview with me was done in the spring of 2023 and published after the summer. Many have told me they absolutely loved the interview, others have told me it does not paint a good picture. I leave it to you to form your own opinion, with the guidance to read it as an experience, not as a list of exact statements. https://assured.co.uk/2023/getting-to-know-marten-mickos/
IN THE SWEDISH LANGUAGE
In September of 2023, Swedish cybersecurity expert Jonas Lejon interviewed me about ethical hacking. The text turned out very well, thanks to Jonas’ skills in both security and writing: https://kryptera.se/intervju-med-hackerones-vd-marten-mickos/

Here you will find the columns I wrote for ?bo Underr?ttelser, the oldest newspaper of Finland. Topics range from geopolitics to startups to the unique archipelago in the southwest corner of Finland. No paywall. https://abounderrattelser.fi/tag/marten-mickos/
IN THE FINNISH LANGUAGE
Video recording of a presentation on ethical hacking I made for the Finnish public sector in August of 2023. About 15 min presentation and another 15 min of Q+A: https://www.mediaserver.fi/video/digiturva/10073/WlYHwg

This article is actually from 2020 but it’s so well written that it deserves to be referenced again: https://www.op-media.fi/digitalisaatio/hyvishakkerit-parantavat-tietoturvaa/
And for those with a subscription to Helsingin Sanomat, here are my 2023 columns about startups and business:
Kenest? tulee menestyv? startup-yritt?j??
Kiitosten tyhji?ss?
N?in markkinoidaan oikein
Hyv?t neuvot kalliit, huonot neuvot kalliimmat
And there were still more guest columns, blog postings and interviews. 2023 was a year of writing, learning, and a lot of change. As we leave the old year behind, let us not leave the learning behind. The wisdom we accrue by listening to each other is what forms the foundation of our future successes.
