2023 MARCH 18 / DONKEYS, SELTZER, LINCOLN CHIMES
Good People, For all of you with inquisitive minds : this is a small set of conversations that have occurred this week in the world of design, technology, business, human endeavour and human interest. best, hemmant

HOW THEY DID IT / FROM NUCLEAR ENGINEER TO SELTZER FOUNDER
"Sandro Roco is not your typical consumer packaged goods creator. Born in Queens and raised in Central Jersey by Filipino immigrant parents, Roco became a nuclear engineer and worked in both finance and tech before a newfound connection to his Asian American identity inspired him to start his own company. This circuitous path to entrepreneurship, however, is what he credits for his success, as each experience prepared him to chart a unique path into the beverage world."

AT LONG LAST / A DONKEY FAMILY TREE
"The donkey is a key, if increasingly marginalized, character in human history. Once venerated, the animal has been an object of ridicule for so long that the word “asinine” — derived from the Latin asinus, meaning “like an ass or a donkey” — means “stupid.” Donkeys and donkey work are essential to the livelihoods of people in developing countries, but elsewhere donkeys have all but disappeared. In a new study, genetics and archaeology combine to reveal the ancient origins of humanity’s first beast of burden."

MODERN LIVING / WHY HUMANS DON'T HAVE FUR
""We technically have hair all over our bodies, it's just miniaturised hair follicles," says Tina Lasisi, a biological anthropologist at the University of Southern California who specialises in the science of hair and skin. "But it's miniaturised to the point where it functionally doesn't insulate us anymore." Scientists don't definitively know the reason behind this change from thicker, coarser fur to these light vellus hairs, and they also don't know exactly when it happened. Still, several theories have been suggested as to what could have sparked the loss of our hair."

POWERFUL PLASTICS / LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR'S CARBON-FIBER MONOFUSELAGE
"The LB744's chassis will be both lighter and stiffer than the Aventador's. The structure combines parts made out of hugely strong forged composite—a technology that was pioneered by Lamborghini and the Callaway golf equipment company—as well as carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic parts."

DSC-HX99 RNV / SONY'S POINT-AND-SHOOT CAMERA FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
"....it’s a device that’s about making photography accessible to those who couldn’t enjoy the hobby before. As for the viewfinder, it’s a Retissa Neoviewer from Japan’s QD Laser. It projects a digital image from the camera directly to the retina of a user. Sony notes the technology won’t work for everyone, but for those who it does, the viewfinder will allow them to use the HX99 to see faces, read signs and capture photos and videos."

MODERN LIVING / LINCOLN CHIMES CREATED BY DETROIT’S SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
"If you’re anything like me, you dwell on the various sounds that an automobile emits. Whether it’s the “thunk” of a closing door, a clicking turn signal, or haptic infotainment feedback, these sounds are something ever-so-slight that contribute to the overall driving and ownership experience. In particular, startup chimes are often unique, distinctive sounds that define a specific vehicle or manufacturer. The one that stands out is the melodic chime found in the 2020-to-present Lincoln Corsair and Aviator. This chime was actually recorded by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and implemented into these two vehicles. Take a listen."
