Although only one person is seen in this photograph, enjoying the last of her holidays, there is a significant variety of intelligently effective callings or occupations (Dewey, 1916) that this woman possesses not limited to a first-aid officer, course designer, lover, artist, mother, friend, business entrepreneur, student, barista, consumer, a neighbour, and an educator, about to go back to work.
An occupation is a pluralism of being, doing, and knowing simultaneously (Quay, 2016). Dewey boldly stated that occupation is the only thing that balances the capacity of an individual with their social service.
Although many educators struggle to imagine teaching and educational organisations in ways other than those that are familiar (Quay, 2016), numerous studies have shown that integrating learning technologies have positive effects on student engagement (Chen et al. 2010).
If a teacher is to simply ‘talk at’ a class and bore their students, retention levels of the content drop significantly. Myhill et al (2012) suggest that weak educational knowledge can lead to sterile teaching, divorced from reality. It remains incumbent on the teacher to upskill with engaging educational strategies and industry relevance to maintain interest.
Resources, activities, and strategies enhance self-regulated learning, quantitative reasoning, and promotion of reflective and integrative higher-order thinking (Dumford & Miller, 2018) which supports life-long learning because of two inherently natural ways of thinking, affective and reflective.
Examples of various resources and strategies are listed below. What else could you integrate into your Learning Management System for continuous improvement, or into your 2023 lesson plans for the sake of your students?
Have a wonderful year as you inspire the next generation.
