History

The Detroit Auto Show is the oldest auto show in North America. It was first held in 1899 at the Belle Isle Casino in Detroit, Michigan. The show was originally called the Detroit Automobile Show, and it was only open to members of the automotive trade. In 1907, the show moved to the Michigan State Fair Coliseum. It was renamed the International Motor Show in 1916, and it became open to the public in 1924.

The show was renamed the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in 1989. It was held in January from 1989 to 2019, but it was moved to September 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the most iconic cars in history have been unveiled at the NAIAS, including the Ford Model T, the Chevrolet Corvette, and the Chrysler Airflow. The show has also been the site of many world premieres, such as the Tesla Model 3 and the Rivian R1T.
