2023 at The Conduit - Climate and Sustainability

As we bid farewell to another momentous year at The Conduit, we embark on a journey to revisit the profound dialogues that have enriched our collective consciousness.?

?

When we emerged from the galvanizing summit of COP28, we felt it was fitting to honor those individuals who have blazed trails in the pursuit of environmental sustainability. These visionary minds have not only challenged our perspectives but have also inspired us to delve deeper into the complexities of our planet's well-being.?

Deforestation Halt – People Power in the Congo Basin ?

For this talk, we were joined by:?

Godi Godar – Grassroots climate activist from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and founder of Go Conscious Earth .

Hannah Peck – Deputy Director and Policy and Research Lead at Go Conscious Earth.?

Joycelyn Longdon – Environmental activist and academic, who is leading the way in bioacoustic exploration of global rainforests.?

They discusssed the importance of preserving forests, particularly in the Congo Basin, and the need to empower local communities in conservation efforts. They also explored the use of bioacoustics technology and the role of carbon offsets in forest preservation.?

?

?

Greta Thunberg and Other Young Leaders on Aiding Activists ?

For this talk, we were joined by a panel of leading young climate activists:?

Greta Thunberg?

Tori Tsui ?

Vanessa Nakate ?

Daphne Frias ?

Dominique P. ?

Ati Viviam Villafa?a Izquierdo ??

Dr Mya-Rose Birdgirl Craig D.Sc. h.c. ?

The group addressed the need for real systems change to address the climate crisis, and the role that they have all played in publicly speaking truth to power around the climate crisis. They foregrounded the importance of love and joy in resistance movements, and how empowering diverse grassroots movements may just be the key to an equitable and sustainable world.?

Renewable Energy: The Next Generation ?

The panel for this event consisted of:?

Pilita Clark – Associate Columnist and Editor at the Financial Times , where she writes on climate and corporate life. Formerly, she was the FT’s environment correspondent, and was named Environment Journalist of the Year three times by the British Press Awards.?

Ben Backwell – CEO of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) , who represent the private sector wind industry across the planet. He is also author of Wind Power: The Struggle for a New Global Industry (2017).?

Juliet Davenport – Founder and former Chief Executive of Good Energy , who have twice been named the Sunday Times Best Green Company.?

Rhea Hamilton – Managing Director of General Atlantic , on their BeyondNetZero team.??

The speakers discussed the challenges and potential solutions in transitioning to renewable energy sources. They noted that while renewable energy has the potential to address climate change and improve energy security, its current slower pace of growth is due to issues such as the lack of bankable projects and infrastructure, high costs, and regulatory hurdles. They propose possible solutions, such as expanding US renewable energy projects, incentivizing investment in renewable energy, and addressing supply chain issues, while acknowledging the potential impact of geopolitical pressures, such as China's dominance in the renewable energy market.?
