2023 APWA PWX Recap

I am sitting once again in the San Diego airport, preparing to return to STL after a week of the International Public Works Conference at the San Diego Convention Center.

Here is my overview.

Public Works departments all over the world are beginning to fully grasp the idea of technology in public works. From simply visualizing information to making intelligent data-driven decisions. The role of GIS which is one of the 5 top tech trends identified by the APWA is becoming ever more foundational and mission critical to day-to-day operations. As I have referenced in my other article GIS is not part of a city it is a city... The public works professionals understand that everything they deal with on a daily basis exists somewhere and there is always something about that thing they need to know. This at its core is inherently a GIS... It exists where and what do you know about it...

Once again ArcGIS Solutions was a big hit... As well as Drone Technology... AVL and sensor feed information... Indoor Mapping Technology and also infrastructure/Utility mapping and operations technology...

I fully believe that the sooner governments fully understand and accept the fact that GIS is mission critical to not only Public Works, but every aspect of government (local, state, or county)... The better they will be off in the long run... Accepting GIS as a foundational enterprise software and aligning consulting and services support to help them plan, build, optimize, and run an effective GIS the sooner they will be able to make intelligent, socially equitable, and sustainable decisions to better serve their communities.

Having this approach will result in sustained ROI and smother operations across the board in government. If you have not talked to an Account Manager and Solution Engineer for your jurisdiction about how you can plan to move forward and create a system to support operations feel free to reach out to me and I will get you in contact with your team. Every City, County, and State government and or agency has a team that is ready to connect and help you plan out the route forward.

Until then...

Key Identification for Needed Change

Keep up the good work...

Its up to us...
