2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying preview, 6-8 September 2023

SuperSport, the biggest sports broadcaster in Africa, brings viewers on DStv extended action from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying, with group stage, Matchday 6 fixtures set to be played from Wednesday 6 to Friday 8 September 2023.

DStv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match.

DStv also offers a wide range of language options, including English original, Swahili, Ki-Swahili, Amharic, Pidgin, Twi, Luganda and Portuguese, while DStv Stream allows viewers to watch their favourite football live anywhere, any time.

The AFCON qualifying action gets underway on Wednesday 6 September with a dead rubber from Group J which sees Libya (eliminated) host Equatorial Guinea (qualified), before Thursday 7 September brings crunch action from Group E: Ghana and Angola will host Central African Republic and Madagascar respectively.

Of the quartet, only Madagascar are out of the running, leaving Ghana (9 points), Angola (8) and CAR (7) battling for two places at the AFCON finals. The Black Stars will feel confident that they can hold off a challenge from the Wild Beasts in Kumasi, while the Palancas Negras will know that a win at home to the already-eliminated Barea will guarantee a return to the tournament finals for the first time since 2019.

“We need to keep our focus and stay on course,” said Angola coach Pedro Goncalves. “We have a good chance to qualify for the Nations Cup and I want us to seize it.”

Ghana coach Chris Hughton, meanwhile, is well aware of the potential ramifications awaiting him if his side fall to CAR and fail to qualify: “Our strategy for the next match is to win. We're playing at home. We know we have to get a result. Obviously, it's a game where we know the consequences if we don't win.”

Thursday also features key matches for East African sides Uganda and Tanzania, as they battle to join Algeria in qualifying from Group F. The Cranes will be away to already-eliminated Niger, while the Taifa Stars will visit the already-qualified North African heavyweights.

Tanzania need only avoid defeat in Annaba against the Desert Foxes to join their opponents in the 2024 AFCON draw, and their Algerian coach Adel Amrouche is hopeful that they can achieve only a third successful qualification (adding to 1980 and 2019).

“It would be a great achievement to qualify, but we must not get ahead of ourselves. Algeria have a powerful team and I do not believe that they will be easier to play against just because they have already secured their ticket,” said Amrouche.

Thursday wraps with another dead rubber from Group J between Tunisia (qualified) and Botswana (eliminated), before Friday brings three games which also have no stakes: Egypt (qualified) host Ethiopia (eliminated) in Group D; Burkina Faso (qualified) tackle Eswatini (eliminated) in Group B; and South Sudan (eliminated) visit Mali (qualified) in Group G.
