COP27 Loss & Damage

Loss and damage made the headlines as one of the significant outcomes of the UN Climate Change conference #COP27. Governments agreed to establish a loss and damage fund, to compensate the countries that are the most vulnerable to climate disasters yet have contributed little to the climate crisis. This is a positive signal that developing countries have been waiting for a long time and help rebuild broken trust.?

COP15 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

Historic outcome at the UN Biodiversity conference #COP15: almost 200 countries have agreed to a new set of goals and targets to protect and restore nature for current and future generations, ensure its sustainable use as well as spur investments for a green global economy. This framework provides a good foundation for global action on biodiversity, complementing the #ParisAgreement for Climate, paving the way towards a climate-neutral, nature-positive and resilient world by 2050.

Patagonia founder giving away his company

The founder of the US outdoor apparel brand decided to give away his company. He transferred the ownership of Patagonia , valued at about $3 billion, to a specially designed trust and a non-profit organisation to preserve the company’s independence and ensure that all of its profits are used to combat climate change and protect undeveloped land around the globe. Yvon Chouinard stated

“I never wanted to become a billionaire”.

A bold statement in the capitalist world we live in. Very inspiring!

EU New Regulations

The European Union has made bold steps towards sustainable development by imposing strong regulations to companies such as:

  • The EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) which applies to all companies listed on the EU regulated market.
  • New EU legislation to combat greenwashing will increase focus on companies’ marketing practices and sustainability reporting.
  • New EU strategy for sustainable and circular textiles targeting fast fashion by introducing labeling on clothes that would tell consumers how easily recyclable and environmentally friendly they are.
  • Zero emissions vehicles: all new cars and vans registered in Europe will be zero-emission by 2035. EU will end the sale of new CO2 emitting cars in Europe by 2035.
  • New rules for production, recycling and repurposing of batteries: sustainability requirements on carbon footprint, recycled content and performance and durability will be introduced gradually from 2024 onwards.

US Inflation Reduction Act

This is the most significant piece of climate legislation in the history of the United States. It will deploy nearly $400 billion over the coming decade to slash carbon emissions. The Act represents an expansive investment in the energy industry, with many provisions targeting clean energy and climate change issues through funding and tax credits.?

B Corp movement picking up

The B Corp movement is growing worldwide by reaching +5000 certified companies in 2022. Today, the B Corp community spans 79 countries, 154 industries, and over 400,000 workers, all led and coordinated by 13 regional global partner organisations. The growth of the movement has been particularly impressive in Europe since the #Covid19 pandemic.?

GCC investment in renewable energies

  • Saudi Arabia will contribute $2.5 billion to a green initiative in the Middle East over the next ten years, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced during the Cop27 UN climate summit.?
  • UAE has plans to invest an additional $160 billion in clean and renewable energy sources over the next three decades on the road to net zero.
  • QIA ( Qatar Investment Authority ), the sovereign wealth fund of the State of Qatar, has today agreed to invest EUR 2.43 million in RWE AG (RWE) to support RWE’s accelerated Growing Green strategy.

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week will convene the global community for a series of dialogues on the transition to a net-zero future on 14-19 January 2023.

The World Economic Forum annual meeting will be held on 16-20 January 2023 in Davos for “ cooperation in a fragmented world”.

The World Government Summit 2023 will be held under the theme “shaping Future Governments” bringing roughy leaders, global experts and decision makers on 13-15 February 2023 in Dubai.

2023 SDG Summit will be convened on 19-20 September 2023, during the United Nations General Assembly high-level week. Heads of State and Government will gather at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Inner Development Goals Summit will be a 2-day exploration of the “The IDGs in Action”, taking place from October 11-12, 2023 in Stockholm.

COP28 UN Climate Change Conference taking place in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December 2023.

The first series is dedicated to B Corp (or B Corporation). #CertifiedBCorp companies meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.
