2022 REPowerEU: Heat Pumps Will Play a Key Role

On 18 May 2022, The European Union announced the "REPowerEU" energy plan, which will invest 300 billion euros to accelerate the energy transition to reduce dependence on Russia's fossil fuels. The specific stretch map of European countries striving to end energy dependence on Russia is gradually becoming clear.?The REPowerEU?plan?puts forward an additional?set of?actions?to:

  • save energy;?
  • diversify supplies;?
  • quickly substitute fossil fuels?by accelerating?Europe’s?clean energy?transition;?
  • smartly combine?investments and reforms.

Heat pumps, a kind of zero-emission, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly product can play a significant role in this plan: the roughly 2.5 million heat pumps the sector expects to sell in Europe in 2022 will save 4.5-5 billion BCM of gas. Also, the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) calculates around 20 million heat pumps will be installed in the EU by 2026 and nearly 60 million by 2030.

Thomas Nowak, secretary-general of the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) said:?“Today the EU Commission set out many good jigsaw pieces but did not shape a consistent picture on heating and cooling. Europe needs a heat pump strategy and the industry an EU heat pump accelerator to speed up deployment and help Europeans get off fossil gas faster.”

The national policy supports heat pump deployment

Many countries implement many policies to force or expand the use of heat pumps, diversify energy sources and reduce energy dependence for long-term consideration.?

UK

In November 2021, the “Energy Efficiency 2021” released by the International Energy Agency mentioned that the UK plans to phase out the sale of gas-fired boilers as part of a plan to implement zero-carbon building standards.

Ireland

Oil-fired boilers will be banned in new buildings from 2022, and gas-fired boilers will be banned in new buildings from 2025.

Netherlands

The Netherlands plans to install 2 million heat pumps by 2030 and plans to grant subsidies to install 100,000 heat pumps a year from 2024.

Norway

In 2020, Norway provided subsidies to more than 2,300 households through the ENOVA program, with a focus on the high-temperature heat pump market for district heating.

US

Under the Air Source Heat Pump Act of 2021, for heat pumps that meet certain criteria, consumers will be eligible for a 20% tax credit on qualifying expenditures, totaling up to $800.

Governments across the world announce new measures to speed up the pace of energy transition from natural gas to new energy sources, to help to achieve zero carbon emissions as quickly as possible. Based on renewable energy sources, the heat pump is gaining more attention from people. In the coming decades, the demand for heat pumps will grow faster than any time before.?
