2022 Recipients of Inaugural Dr. Tina Pierce Social Justice Scholarship announced

Dr. Tina Pierce, in conjunction with the Ohio State University is pleased to announce the 2022 recipients of the inaugural Dr. Tina Pierce Social Justice Scholarship: Elisabeth Cobbs and Shayanna Hinkle-Moore. The Dr. Tina Pierce Social Justice Scholarship provides funding to Columbus City School graduates who have demonstrated a commitment to community engagement, social justice, or political activism. Ms. Cobbs and Ms. Hinkle-Moore will not only receive financial assistance, but also mentorship opportunities and community engagement training throughout the year. Congratulations Elisabeth and Shayanna!
Elisabeth Cobbs is a graduate of Whetstone High School and is majoring in both Public Leadership Management & Policy and Sociology (with Honors). She is in the process of becoming a poll worker, working to become Narcan certified, and volunteers at the Riverview International Center, supporting newly arrived immigrants and refugees. She is passionate about criminal justice reform and assisting reentering citizens. In response to receiving this honor, Elisabeth says, “ I will continue to empower individuals and encourage civic engagement-a healthy community is one in which we are all heard and supported.”

Shayanna Hinkle-Moore is a graduate of Independence High School and is majoring in Public Management, Leadership & Policy as well as City and Regional Planning. She is an active student leader who currently serves as President of the Black Student Association at OSU and as an ambassador for the Department of Social Change. She is passionate about helping her Columbus community to impact positive change in the areas of Pre-K through 12th grade education, criminal justice, recidivism, and leadership & development. Shayanna is also campaigning for the Vice President of the OSU Undergraduate Student Government. In response to receiving this honor, Shayanna says, “I plan to continue using my student positions at OSU to serve the student body, future students, and the Greater Columbus community on a larger scale.”
Elisabeth and Shayanna will have multiple opportunities to volunteer, connect, and engage with current Columbus City Schools students throughout the school year. In creating this scholarship, Dr. Tina Pierce, a Columbus City Schools graduate herself, envisioned the formation of sustainable connections between current and past Columbus City Schools youth leaders. These young activists and scholarship recipients will continue a legacy of social change within our urban community that will be solidified for generations to come.
