2022 PISA Results: A Global Panorama of Education

The 2022 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results offer striking insights into the current state of the global education system. Managed by the OECD, these tests are a key benchmark in measuring students' achievements in mathematics, science, and reading across the world.

Singapore's Leadership and Asia's Strength

This year's results place Singapore at the top with an impressive score of 560, indicating that its students are about three to five years ahead of the global average.

This accomplishment highlights Singapore's commitment to educational excellence.

Additionally, other Asian countries and regions, including Macau, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, are also among the top five, demonstrating the continent's educational prowess.

The Situation in Europe and North America

According to the 2022 PISA results, Estonia scored the highest in Europe with 516 points, particularly excelling in science (526 points).

Ireland, with its notable performance in reading, secured the ninth position. In North America, Canada stood out for its overall performance, while the United States ranked 18th.

The Impact of the Pandemic and Europe's Decline

The pandemic has left significant impacts on education systems. OECD researchers note that the decline in European education systems is not solely pandemic-related but also stems from longer-term systemic issues, such as a lack of teacher support and resources.

A Global Decline in Mathematics

There has been an average decline of 15 points in mathematics worldwide. This equates to approximately three-quarters of a school year's worth of learning.

Reading scores also saw a drop, equivalent to half a year, while science scores remained relatively stable.

The Lowest Scoring Countries and Economies

Countries and economies like the Philippines, Uzbekistan, Kosovo, the Dominican Republic, and Cambodia were among the lowest scorers. These results underscore the urgent need for strengthening and reforming education systems in these regions.

The 2022 PISA results shed light on the state of global education, emphasizing the importance of continuous investment and development in education systems to ensure students worldwide can achieve their full potential.

Additionally, the increasing importance of online courses has become more evident for everyone in this context.
