As one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, Pakistan has been facing the brunt of climate induced hazards. In the summer of 2022, the country experienced the largest amount of rainfall since 1961. Consequently, droughts in Cholistan desert along with floods across the country affected over 33 million people in 120 districts that caused devastation to lives, livelihoods, livestock and critical infrastructure in Pakistan. Alkhidmat teams responded to the challenge by carrying out integrated rescue and relief work in affected areas. The immediate step taken was the evacuation of stranded families to safe shelters. In addition to relief assistance in the form of food and non-food humanitarian supplies to all affected parts of the country, Alkhidmat volunteers also established tent villages, kitchens, medical camps, field hospitals, maternity centers, water filtration plants and temporary learning centers in affected areas.

Alkhidmat Foundation’s vast network of educational institutions and assistance programs, including Alfalah Scholarship Program, Child Protection Centers, Skills Development Centers and Child Protection and Rehabilitation Trust (CPRT) catered the needs of brilliant needy students at school, college, and university levels. To resume academic activities in flood-hit areas, the top three needs identified by disaster management teams on the ground in affected districts included setting up safe spaces to hold classes for girls and boys, repairing damaged classes, and establishing learning spaces near communities for safe access, especially for girls

The most pressing among others is the acute water crisis in Pakistan. More than 80 percent of the country’s population faces severe water scarcity. Water availability in Pakistan has reduced from 5,229 cubic meters per inhabitant in 1962 to below 1,000 in 2022. As a result of flood damages to public and communal water supply systems, an additional millions of households are now forced to rely on unsafe sources of drinking water. Throughout the year, Alkhidmat implemented pre-planned water projects across the country, while simultaneously supporting improved access to sufficient water of appropriate quality and quantity for drinking, cooking, washing facilities, and maintaining personal hygiene in flood-affected areas

The problems faced by orphan children are very common and well known. Majority of them have no guardian at all, and thus remain one of the most vulnerable segments of society. Alkhidmat is taking care of over 20,000 orphans, providing them full support such as education, health, nutritious food, recreational activities and boarding facilities. Heavy rains and floods rendered further damages to thousands of orphans while many lost their sole financial support amidst floods. Alkhidmat stepped in for swift action by launching an orphan support program under Alkhidmat Tameer-e-Watan Program. Currently, over 1,330 orphans are being sponsored by Alkhidmat in flood affected areas across Pakistan. Sponsored orphans have been included in Alkhidmat Orphan Support Program and are being catered according to the international standards
