2022 Fortune 500 List & The Need for Opportunity and Progress for Black CEOs

In conversation with Fortune’s Paige McGlauflin for the announcement of this year’s 2022 Fortune 500 list, I shared my thoughts on the standstill that is the number of Black CEOs included in the ranking as well as how progress can be made.

It is certainly disheartening to see a lack of progress made in moving the needle for Black representation at the CEO level of Fortune 500 companies, but it isn’t surprising.

This isn’t about a lack of talent, it’s about a lack of opportunity.

When the opportunities for P&L experience are not offered to a Fortune 500 corporation’s senior Black executives, the likelihood of that executive being considered for a CEO role is slim to none. While it’s only one part of the reason we don’t see more progress on this front, addressing some of the symptoms we see year after year will lead to change.

That’s why The ELC is a resource to the leadership of our member-affiliated companies. One of our signature programs is the C-Suite Academy, an invitation-only program where we pair ELC members whose companies have identified them as being part of their leadership succession plan with actual sitting CEOs to advise them on the nuanced skills and tools they need to be successful CEOs.

In addition to our C-Suite Academy, our?CEO GameChanger Conference??informs and equips CEOs through a highly engaging peer-to-peer experience meant to inspire and motivate them to embrace disruptive strategies that yield bold, transformational, and measurable actions to eradicate systemic racism in business.

At The Executive Leadership Council, we know well that increasing the number of Black CEOs doesn’t happen overnight. Yet, we are hopeful that in our work with Fortune 500 leaders, we will continue to offer the resources and support to advance this mission expeditiously with strategy and sustainability.?

In another country which happens to be in the Southern part of Africa this scenario exist more so when it come to female CEO’s. The speeches, the mentoring programmes, the development spaces and grooming agendas exist but the targets don’t equate to effort. Few make it and are celebrated with much fanfare but for many .. so close yet so far. Strength
