The 2022 African Investigative Journalism Conference at Wits University
Fojo Media Institute
We strengthen journalism for a democratic and sustainable world.
From October 31 to November 2, the Wits University organised the 2022 edition of the AIJC in South Africa. Fojo Media Institute was one of the partner of this conference. A greatly successful event!
Two weeks ago, the African Investigative Journalism Conference took place in Johannesburg. The 2022 edition was the biggest edition ever with 375 delegates from 42 African countries (and 10 others); over 140 speakers in 80+ sessions. The openness and will to connect, collaborate, support each other and share experiences was greatly felt by participants throughout the event.
"This is a chance to showcase good African investigative journalism, and build and encourage collaborations"
-- Anton Harber, Wits University
From media sustainability to environmental investigative journalism - this 3-days event was packed with a myriad of different topics. Artificial intelligence and its interaction with journalism was extensively discussed in many sessions. It is clear that journalism is experiencing a drastic shift in this post-pandemic era. Many skilled and brave journalists have shared their experiences of investigating and uncovering change-making stories in difficult contexts.

One of our Project Manager, Sofia Hultqvist, had the honour to give the last words of the conference and share the good news: Fojo Media Institute is co-organising the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in 2023 (organised by the Global Investigative Journalism Network). We hope to meet this wonderful audience again in Gothenburg next year! Could the amazing band present at the AIJC22 come to in Sweden in 2023?
A Fojo delegation
The Fojo-IMS Media Reform Program and its Ethiopian delegation of journalists were present during the 3-days event. Superb sessions with lots of interesting lectures and discussions on the importance of investigative journalism in Africa today.
