Bridges of Hope

Reflecting on the accomplishments of the fiscal year 2022-2023, our Giving Children Hope community has made significant strides in various areas, leaving an indelible impact on those we serve. Over the past year, we proudly:

  • Distributed 2.5 million pounds of food to 1,100 families, encompassing 2,700 children and benefiting a total of 4,700 individuals.
  • Our Christmas Toys initiative brought joy to nearly 2,100 children across 69 schools.
  • Provided 3.8 million pounds of essential household items to nearly 50,000 families and individuals locally and abroad.

Additionally, in the pursuit of our vision to empower families, our Parent Leadership Program achieved significant milestones. We are proud to have assisted 40 families in saving an average of $240 per month, fostering financial stability for their future.

“I have seen a number of cases where students come to class with more focus and are ready to learn. There is so much of a confidence boost in them because they are well-nourished.” - A We've Got Your Back School Partner

Overcoming Adversity

In Orange County, about 9% of people, roughly 3.3 million families were food insecure in 2022 leaving food banks providing food to 130,000 children per month (View the Full Article at Voice of OC). While there are numerous food banks and pantries that do an excellent job reducing hunger, there is a segment of the community that gets missed-low-income families without transportation. Without transportation, thousands of children do not have access to food pantries where they can pick up food during the weekend. Our We’ve Got Your Back (WGYB) program was designed to address this unmet need.

However, it is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge a recent challenge we are facing. Due to a clarification of government food-use rules, we are no longer able to include government-sourced food in our backpack program, which immediately affected 600 families with 2,000 children who have lost access to weekend meals.

Friday Food Distribution at Giving Children Hope

Undeterred by this setback, we remain committed to our mission, steering into the future with resilience and determination. Our focus for the upcoming years includes rebuilding our Backpack Food Distribution through new partnerships, community food drives, and child and family sponsorships, to provide up to 600 backpacks weekly by the end of 2024. Additionally, we are enhancing our Parent Leadership Program and introducing a Student Leadership Program in 2024, underscoring our commitment to comprehensive community and family development.

The Next Generation

As we forge ahead, we recognize the need to strengthen our community ties. Our initiative, Next Generation (NextGen), invites individuals aged 18–40 to join us in leading, serving, and effecting positive change. We also acknowledge urgent infrastructure needs, including leaking roofs, faulty plumbing, and an aging parking lot, demanding our attention to ensuring a safe and conducive environment for our community.
