2021 Publication of Marriott's Practical Electrocardiography - 13th Edition!
David Strauss, MD, PhD
CEO & Founder, Translational Cures | Former FDA Acting Chief Scientist
It is my pleasure to share that we have published the 13th Edition of Marriott's Practical Electrocardiography! This new edition stands on the shoulder of giants in electrocardiography. Dr. Henry (Barney) Marriott led the book from the 1st edition (1954) to the 8th edition (1988). Dr. Galen Wagner led the book from the 9th edition (1994) through the 12th edition (2014).
I was fortunate to join Galen Wagner as co-editor/author of the 12th edition. With the passing of Galen in 2016, I took on the torch to create the 13th edition, combining with Dr. Douglas Schocken from Duke Cardiology to co-edit/author this new edition. We have dedicated this edition to Galen, who was a mentor, colleague and friend.
We have introduced major updates in this edition, including a substantially updated chapter on drug effects, a completely new chapter on adult congenital heart disease, and an overhaul of the abnormal rhythms section of the book (chapters 13-21). We have also added summary illustrations at the end of each chapter (example below) and quizzes that are available online. The updates to the 9 chapters in the abnormal rhythms section were led by Dr. James Daubert, head of the Duke Cardiology Electrophysiology (EP) Section, and many of his Duke EP colleagues.
One of the strengths of Marriott’s Practical Electrocardiography through its 67-year history has been its lucid foundation for understanding the basis for electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation. Again, in this revision, we have attempted to retain the best of the Marriott tradition—emphasis on the concepts required for everyday ECG interpretation and the simplicities, rather than complexities, of the ECG recordings.
Thank you to all of the contributors and chapter authors! And a special thank you to co-editor/author Doug Schocken for our collaboration to update this classic book.

The Rest of the Article Contains:
- Summary of the updates in the 13th edition with the full table of contents
- Diagnoses of the ECGs from the cover of the book (with example contents of Summary Illustrations at the end of each chapter)
- Author affiliations and titles of all 29 contributors to the 13th Edition
Summary of Updates and Table of Contents
Section I (Basic Concepts) remains in the same order, however subsequent sections and chapters were reorganized.
Section II covers Chamber Enlargement and Conduction Abnormalities with updates to both.
Section III covers Ischemia and Infarction with updates and advanced content now contained in an online-only supplement.
Section IV covers Drugs, Electrolytes, and Miscellaneous Conditions with
- A substantially updated chapter on drug effects and
- A completely new chapter on adult congenital heart disease.
Section V covers Abnormal Rhythms and it has undergone a complete reorganization with substantial updates and revisions by multiple members of the Duke Cardiology Division, Electrophysiology Section led by James Daubert.
- This section of the book had last undergone a major update in the 9th edition of the book in 1994.
- With the acceleration of interventional electrophysiology over the past decades, we have learned so much more about abnormal rhythms.
- This section of the book now aims to leverage that knowledge to better understand and teach interpretation of the body-surface ECG, while maintaining simplicities, as championed by Barney Marriott and Galen Wagner.
