2021 Normal, Ortho-Neuro Spine Markets
Well, it's 2021, What was said about the "New Normal 2020" is now the 2021 Normal. Social distancing is a feature of the normal. Everyone in the country is affected one way or the other. Key to coming out of C-19 and perhaps future C-19+x's is an adaptation to the normal. The Ortho-Neurospine medical device markets must consider the following:
- Minimize movement of instrument sets from one hospital or ASC to another.
- Sterile implant and Single Use instrument kits.
- Orthosurgical tech education and training. Company device reps' presence in the OR are they really needed, is it safe to have these persons in the room, is it fair to the patient?
- Be prepared for price concessions if a hospital or ASC decides to take ownership and manage without device reps to assure patient safety.
Marketing and engineering teams, time get the creative juices running full tilt.
- MARCOM messaging for the company to address 2021 normal. It will not be business as usual for some time, if ever again.
- Working remotely is now commonplace, the use of Zoom type services, Facetime and other VR types has shown the office of today might just be obsolete.
- R&D, Designers, Manufacturing Engineering, time to take a hard look at instruments, products, and manufacturing processes. Can product OR workflows be simplified, " Are all those complex widgets really needed?" How can the cost of instrument sets be reduced so the company can park sets in ORs?
- Sales leaders, prepare your sales teams for changes hospitals and ASC might implement. The age of the "box opener and delivery person" might be fading. Understand that case volumes for the near term will be lower
- Executive teams, It's time for innovation, communication more than ever to customers, patients, and both external and internal organizational teams. The coming months requires sound leadership, revenues took a hit in March-April, forecasted to continue for the foreseeable future, shareholders will be nervous.
- Exec's lead with clear messaging, avoid the month to month sales syndrome and reassure all the stakeholders you have their back.
Many of my comments are obvious I just hope it's common thinking for all in this space.
