2021 - My year of no
I was recently given Derek Sivers’ latest book, Hell Yeah or No, what’s worth doing (Thank you, Zo?). I’m a big fan of Derek’s work, and interviewed him ten years ago when I was writing Implement!
The idea the title points to is pretty self-evident. If you’re not feeling “hell yeah” about something, then say no.
I’m using this as a bit of a mantra for my year. I’m working less than I have for a long time. I’m being very selective about the work I’m doing. I’m saying no to lots of opportunities and requests. And being very sparing with my yes’s.
My friend Rowdy McLean once had a year of saying no. My friend Stacey Barr had a year of grace (which I suspect is rolling into a decade of grace).
My year of no steals from both these ideas, as well as from Derek’s book.
And of course, lots of no’s makes space for some big yes’s.
I know you are good enough. They don't want you to believe that. Self-esteem and confidence building for family scapegoats.
3 年Unless you are capable of saying NO without feeling a fraction of guilt, your YES is not conceived in true freedom.

3 年Peter, I read these questions earlier this week somewhere: 1. Does this excite me? 2. Will I learn something? 3. Will I make money from it? The author had to have 2/3 to say yes.

3 年Thanks Peter, for this and all your shadings. I continue to find them nourishing. It strikes me, with this one, that a year of saying NO! might imply that one was saying yes too often as a default setting. Maybe exploring and experimenting to find the universally appropriate "Omega point"... from which the appropriate yes or no intuitively arises indefinitely might mean no need to take a year of no? Of course, this is only something that occurs and appeals to me...…and we each have a personal and different perspective- and we each have a partial truth in our perspective.
