2021 Make it Your Year
Here is my guide to making 2021 your best year yet:
- Where are you going? If you haven’t set the goals and objectives for where you want to go this year how will you ever make a plan to get there? So first thing you need to do is look at what you want to accomplish this year so you can focus on what you need to work on.
- Is it realistic? Did you set goals that you can actually get to in the next 12 months. Yes we say have goals so big they scare people… but for planning purposes you need to break that big scary goal into what you can make happen this year. Maybe have a goal and a stretch goal. You don’t want to set yourself up for failure because that is going to bring on self doubt and make you lose your drive and ambition. You also don’t want to make them too easy that you don’t have to work to get there. They should be goals that challenge you, but that you can make happen.
- What challenges do you face? No goal = no business; nothing usually happens without having at least one challenge or something that is a roadblock that you have to overcome. Once you know what your goals are it’s time to take a look at the things that could prevent you from hitting that goal. In 2020 no one really knew that COVID-19 would be a challenge to their business, but now in 2021 we are going into the year keenly aware of that challenge. Is it going to continue to be a challenge for you, or have you already overcome it? What other challenges do you have with staff, resources, fulfillment, talent, time, focus, knowledge. There might only be a few things standing in your way, or there might be a lot of things that are standing in your way. For a lot of people some of the biggest challenges are in their own heads.
- How will you overcome those challenges? Once you know what the challenges are, now you have to take a look at what it is going to take to overcome them. You can plan and remove as many challenges as possible, because I guarantee there are going to be more challenges that you haven’t thought of yet. That is why it becomes so important to remove the ones that you can.
- What fears do you have? You, like most people, have created a number of fears that are in your own head and are now holding you back. You might be afraid of failing, so you never really start because you don’t want to fail. In essence wasn’t that actually failing? So regardless, the only way you really fail is by doing nothing, yet that is what most people do, they do nothing. Some people are afraid of success, and the issues that come when their business grows. So as a result, you don’t actually try to scale the business because you don’t want to deal with the success. One of the best ways to eliminate fears is to get a coach, someone who has been there before and can help you through it. Give you the confidence that you are making the right decision and by doing that help to eliminate some of that fear. The more competent you are the more confident you are in your decisions, and the less fear that you will have. You have to know your fear, you have to confront the fear, and you have to conquer it to be able to grow. Both as an individual and in your business.
- What are the benchmarks? Something I have been saying for years, what gets measured gets managed and what gets managed gets results. When you have your goals for the year, you now need to break them down into smaller daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly goals. This is how you know if you are on track to get to where you want to go. You should know the daily numbers, and weekly numbers but really look at the monthly numbers to see if you are on track or not. If you aren’t on track, why aren’t you? Is this a fixable problem or something that you can’t change and you need to do a goal adjustment? Have you called your coach and talked to them about tracking your goals?
- Accountability!! You have to be accountable, bottom line, end of story. You need to pick a day every month to go over numbers and track progress and success. When you do a check in you know where you are and what you need to do!!
