2021: Launching PHI Institute for Augmented Intelligence

It is with great honor and joy that we announce the public launch of PHI Institute for Augmented Intelligence. The seed of the mission and architecture that you will see now has been in the making for years and has also been outlined in our 2020 book BetweenBrains: Taking Back our AI Future. Practicing what we have preached is the next logical step.

We believe that AI will become the defining force of the 21st century and therefore needs a lot more depth, vision, collaboration, and steering in the present tense. It also needs new kinds of institutions and organizations rethought to pre-empt the speed, power, and depth of transformation. PHI is a full circle, adaptive institution that integrates the traits of a brain trust, a research lab, a do-tank, and a venture studio – but goes beyond.

Driven by a public interest mindset, the Institute is designed to build a sense of ownership and momentum towards a purposeful AI future in citizens and leaders. To become a purposeful civilizational toolset, #AI needs to become Augmented Intelligence. We need to set a new, focused AI course and ethos: machine intelligence with the purpose of enhancing the human condition for all. That will need a lot more work, and of course, partners, beyond the leading organizations across sectors who have already placed their trust in us.

As they say, it takes a global village to raise such a force in a beneficial way. We are collaborative by nature and conveners at heart: we work best with high-impact global initiatives in need of unlikely allies coming together. We set out to build the right alliances to guard, shape, and steer the Augmented Intelligence evolution and adoption paths consciously and conscientiously. We hope that we'll find each other sooner than later.
