2021 (Happy) Predictions for Aussies
Let's get the bad news out first: More people will die from COVID in 18 months than 6 years of WWII. Aussie's should have gratitude that, once again, we are a lucky country. We are "girt by sea". However, COVID has had a dramatic impact on the Australian lifestyle. Here are our happy predictions for 2021...
1. Home is your (Entertainment & Office) Castle
More Aussies have spent time in their home during 2020 than ever before. More money will be spent in 2021 remodelling the home for entertainment as well as the home office. More than ever, there may be two people needing a home office! If this is not practical, then upgrading the home with a new purchase is fuelled by the lowest interest rates in a lifetime. There will be a blur between home office and home entertainment for a greater number of Aussies. Controlling and searching for new entertainment content can be time consuming and boring. Prediction #1 is voice control will become ubiquitous in high end home/office automation. Voice control will have security features wrapped into the service. The bandwidth barrier to speed of delivery will be overcome (see #8).
2. Travel is within Australia - to the Regions
The first part is not a hard one to predict. Govt permission is needed to leave this country. But the second part is a major shift. Travel to capital cities by air with hotel accomodation and crowds at tourist destinations is less appealing in 2021. No one wants to be caught in a "lock down". Let alone the potential health risks of heaving crowds. So travel to regional areas will have more appeal. Airbnb will thrive with self contained cabins especially ones for the weekend. Below is their latest website image that captures this trend.
3. Better than Airbnb is your own "Cabin on Wheels"
Why go through the heartache of searching, screening and booking hard to get places. And let's not overlook that these places will become expensive. Airbnb encourage owners to understand supply and demand pricing. Purchase a caravan, motorhome or add a roof top tent to a functional 4WD canopy. Travel with a small group of friends. Avoid caravan parks and pick a spot with free camping. Purchasing a 4WD/motorhome is also at low interest rates at present. The result is a very affordable weekend away. This market will boom.
4. Comforts of home in your "Cabin on Wheels"
More people will welcome travel in a 4WD/caravan/motorhome if there is the convenience of home wrapped with the pleasure of outdoor cooking. More appliances on tap requires more electrical energy. More electrical energy opens up to more creature comforts like air-conditioning running for a good nights sleep. Now you have a home away from home with the benefit of a change in scenery. Lithium batteries are the core enabler to compact high capacity electrical energy. Lithium use will accelerate in 2021.
5. Replenishing Mobile Energy with Solar
If you thought 500W of solar was significant pre-2021, shift gears to 1,000W+. It is a lower cost to add 500W or more solar than a second battery. Besides, when the second battery is depleted, how will it be refreshed? Mapping a caravan/motorhome roof for solar, rather than antenna and hatches will be the trend in 2021. Getting maximum solar on the 4WD will be the popular challenge. In the pic below are 5 x 175W Solar. Could have been 6 if the chairs and table were kept inside than on the roof. With 6 = 1,050W Solar. This will be the norm in 2021 unless you have #6 below.
6. Replenishing with Alternator power on a large scale will accelerate
When solar power is low and electrical demand is high, people no longer want to carry a petrol generator. The noise alone ruins the weekend. Again, if you thought 60A of alternator charging from your vehicle while driving was big pre-2021, we have delivered many 200-250A alternator charging systems in last 3 months. These replenish large lithium battery systems in 2 hours of driving. And, when necessary, idling the vehicle turns it into a power station. We are now delivering systems with Airconditioning capable of running 24/7. This trend will explode for cooling and heating. This will accelerate in 2021.
7. No more LPG
LPG is inefficient, has safety risks and relatively expensive to run. It is also very bulky to install. 3 Way fridges should be banned because of extremely low efficiency. They use more energy than a 1,000W solar system can deliver in perfect weather in a day. Compare this with compressor fridge at 5 times the efficiency. No one likes slaving over a hot stove. Induction cooking is 94% efficient, gas cooking is 40% and generates heat that makes the cook "sweat'. Induction is 2-3 times faster: less time, cooler and cleaner. Instant hot water installs in no time and is the size of a Kleenex box. The equivalent gas system is 20 times bigger and heavier with the mandatory tank full of water. Induction will boom in 2021.
8. AI Automation adds "Magic" to sustainable Electric Power in all cases
When it's hard to see how the impossible is achieved, it's often called "magic'. The magic of the past becomes the norm for today. Video calls from a mobile phone is just one example. Artificial Intelligence (AI) creates simple decisions from complex problems. To do this, a lot of data is required, not only about how you are using energy but environmental changes over time. This will compliment large power and energy systems. Your Grandma will be able to use them as they will speak her language. Voice control and advice will emerge as an easier to use interface than the screen of a mobile phone. Systems will merge infotainment and info-management. In 2021, we predict this will be reality. Why are we so confident with this prediction? Because we are creating it.
