2020 - A Year of Uncertainty

Did you set goals at the beginning of 2020? Did you account for the year to come?

Some people have truly thrived during this process, adapting, finding new ways of working, creating new businesses, embracing the change and finally getting round to doing those things they had been putting off! But others have found themselves falling completely unresourceful. There have been unforeseen challenges in areas that probably weren’t even considered before…. who could’ve anticipated home schooling for 6 months?! There have been those with ‘too much’ time on their hands who even then, didn’t get round to writing that book, learning a language or the instrument they’ve always said they would ‘if only they had time’.

Things are easy when life is comfortably ticking along, in that the daily activities are taken care, you are equipped both mentally and emotionally to deal with any challenges that present themselves and whilst it may not be the life you want, it’s the life of certainty, good & bad, you know what to expect.

When you think about life in this way, resilience is a relative term – a person may be resilient enough to handle what they are given in their usual, day to day life; which is great!

But what happens when life throws a curveball? This is the real test of a person’s resilience - when the certain becomes uncertain! The boundary of what’s known is pushed into that of the unknown and it’s totally outside of a person’s comfort zone. This is when a person’s ‘default mode’ kicks in – a test of their true resilience.

If you have the belief that you can deal with whatever life sends you way, that you’re a resilient person, there’s always a solution…and so on…. then even in times of uncertainty, or what some may call stress, you have the beliefs to support you in finding a solution, even if the solution is unknown to you in that very moment. Just having those kinds of beliefs will influence your perception of the world and the opportunities within it as well as the behaviour you carry out.

On the flip side, if someone were to believe that they aren’t able to cope, they never know the right thing to do, life is hard etc., this will have a huge impact on the action they take (if any), they won’t see solutions and it will be painful along the way!

Here’s the thing; the situation is the situation, and often in that moment, there is little you can do to change it… but in every moment, there is an opportunity to choose how you respond, and it’s your response that ultimately changes what happens next; how the situation unfolds and how you feel about the situation…which is everything!

What’s interesting is that those feelings of uncertainty, fear, anxiety or even guilt that you may have experienced during this period, are most likely the very things that have been holding you back in life generally. 2020 may have been the catalyst that brought to the surface the things you need to deal with to overcome those internal obstacles. It may also have given that drive to get outside your comfort zone and really push yourself to bigger and better things. Either way, you’re probably asking yourself….

What can I do next?

  •  The very first step is to make the decision that you want to change…and because you’re still here, reading I assuming you’re ready!
  •  Next, ask yourself the following questions;

> What have I learnt from 2020?

> What will I do differently in the future?

No matter how you responded to a situation, there is always something positive to learn. When you choose to look at things this way, every experience was of benefit.

  • How can I begin to move forward, become more resilient and make today, 2021 and Beyond a fantastic year?

Khaled Hussain I totally agree. I think many people use the new year as a marker and a time of reflection and you’re absolutely right, everyday counts which is why we’re keen to help people as soon as today rather than waiting for the new year to begin to make every year a success ??
