The year I turned 10 my mom convened a family meeting for all of us (including my father) to set our goals for the first time. She got each of us our notebook where we could write our dreams and objectives; and my mom kept this tradition for many years until my brother and I left home.
I don't remember what I wrote that first year; I know that one of my dreams was to travel to Europe and go from country to country by train, which became a reality when I was 19. Another of my dreams was to come to live in the US; that one became a reality when I was 25. I have thousands of concrete examples that prove that writing down our goals and vision have a direct correlation with actually attaining them.
Since that first goal exercise, every year I have been writing down my goals for the year, my dreams in general, and my vision for the future. As an adult I have experimented with different methodologies on how to set and execute SMART goals.
Last month, I finished the book Your Best Year Ever from Michael Hyatt. I was impressed by the details and simplicity of the 5-step methodology described in the book. Last weekend I spent several hours working on the goals and vision that I had already set at the beginning of 2020 following the five steps.
Because I've been doing goals for so long, the exercise has become a routine and in the last few years didn't have the zing. After reading Your Best Year Ever, I was inspired and motivated to set riskier and exciting goals... the zing is back!
Being a leader means having a vision, inspiring others, and planning to execute that vision. There are many methodologies on how to accomplish each one. I'm so excited with the one I found in Michael Hyatt's book. We have the ability to learn these skills and to bring to life the wonderful leader within us.
