For at least the past decade, I worked on a 2020 vision for my former company, Chick-fil-A, Inc. That work included how to scale a multi-billion dollar company growing at unprecedented rates. Daily, I was asked about my “2020 Plan” for the areas of the company that I led. That plan included strategies, goals and structure to find, keep, develop and lead people in a $20B business. Later, it was focused on creating a sustainable $20B business.
As the reality of 2020 approaches, I am working on something I did not see coming at all and certainly was not in a 2020 vision or plan. Instead of implementing the plan I worked on for a decade, I am 30,000 words into my third book to be released in April 2021, promoting the book I released this past September, speaking to audiences all over the world and advising some great organizations on how to build and strengthen their culture and talent. I am living my dream, but not my vision.
We can have the best of plans and the most inspiring vision and yet, our destiny can be something totally unanticipated. In the midst of all the planning and vision casting, leave room in your work and in your life for unexpected opportunities. Seize them when they come your way. Just because you have an annual plan, a 10-year plan and even a life plan, doesn’t mean that you cannot take an occasional detour from the path. The detour might just be your intended destination after all.
Here’s to 2020 and beyond: may your plans and goals lead you to unexpected opportunities and dreams fulfilled. I am cheering you on all the way!
