IS 2020 CANCELLED?
Lately, many people have asked me for guidance on how to find a job or whether it is a good idea to think about starting a business at the moment and I wanted to share my opinion on this matter.
We are currently living in a difficult time which isn't easy for all of us. It is currently harder to find a job and the full extend of the upcoming economic crisis is just looming on the edge of the horizon. Due to political stimuli like subsidized short-time work or rescue packages the peak got shifted but the amplitude of the impact didn't really get decreased by it.
Does that mean that if you are currently on the job market looking for a job, that there are no chances for you at the moment? Not at all!
A crisis usually leads to some sort of change and changes usually create chances for people to seize. Humans have thrived for millions of years now and this was only possible due to our adaptability during ever changing circumstances.
The best advice I can give to everyone who is starting to lose hope and doesn't know what to do right now, is to think about what could benefit us humans as we are developing towards a physically more distant society and a "low touch economy". It could be novel medical devices which makes it easier and faster to test for infections, new kind of activities which allow us to have fun together while complying to the current regulations or robotic assistants which allow us to perform daily tasks in a more convenient way.
There are always winners and losers in a crisis. The tourism or the aerospace sector got hit heavily and will take a long time to recover from the current turmoil. But sectors like robotics and AI related technologies got a boost and they provide a lot of potential for the future. There is still a long way ahead until we reach the so called "cognitive era" in which various devices obtain a certain level of intelligence so they can make reasonable decisions.
You could sign up for an online course on computer vision or image processing or start a DYI project for building your own robotic manipulator to boost your chances of landing a job in this domain.
Those examples are only the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of other fields which will see a big rise in popularity due to this pandemic. It is up to you what you make out of it.
Furthermore, this is the chance to spend more time with your family and friends which is also crucial to live a well balanced and happy life.
