A Hotel Manager can have many more than just ten problems with communications in their Hotels, but these are often the things that keep Hotel workforce teams from operating.
A Failure to Listen Always stress the importance of listening before you begin a discussion. Inattention keeps people from learning. Focus on the person and what they are saying. Maintain eye contact.
Globalization More communications are being conducted by email or short video conferencing. If you are worried that information is being misunderstood ask participants to summarize their content and agree it.
Culture Differences Make sure your understanding of each is clear. Allow all cultural groups to know you are listening and you are fostering communications. Make sure people from each are contributing and mixing.
Attitude & Ego Communication in teams is harmed because of ego. Make sure that your facial expressions, your gestures and tone of voice match your message. Sometimes Hoteliers must agree to disagree.
Authority A worker can find it difficult to approach and talk with their manager. Difficult topics can be too personal. Speak with co-workers face-to-face. Ensure confidentiality. Never let problems escalate.
Poorly Written Communication Poorly written materials with bad grammar and misunderstood context lead straight to confusion. Always proofread. Have another set of eyes check for mistakes if important.
Gender Bias Sometimes workers only want to relate to people of the same gender. Do not wait for an invitation to speak. Speak loudly and make sure your viewpoints are expressed clearly; Never issue disclaimers and avoid unwarranted apologies.
An Inability of employees to interpret the information Gaps in age and other societal differences makes this communication barrier very real. Make eye contact and try to find some common ground to initiate every discussion.
Inadequate Knowledge Foundation Group functions may suffer setbacks due to a lack of understanding or inadequate knowledge. Extra efforts will need to be made to guarantee that all persons know and understand what they are told. Additional training might not satisfy.
Cliques, Groups and Friendships A tight and exclusive grouping of individuals who bond together for one reason or another can be problematic if they are not objective. Stress that in the Hotel environment all workers need to try to behave so that differences can be minimised and that co-operation is maximised.
Never be afraid to seek assistance from people who demonstrate effective communication skills in your Hotel.
