2019 : A year to scale IoT

2019 : A year to scale IoT

After 10 consecutive years of attending CES, i take a break this year. It has been like a New Year pilgrimage.

I am sure CES 2019 will showcase innovation around IoT which will continue to excite and educate the intellectually curious minds. Having worked in the IoT field, on both consumer and the enterprise side, for over the last decade, there are a few learnings for me that I hope to personally apply but also expect to see the industry move towards.

  1. Deliver end-to-end vertically integrated solutions: Having dealt with IoT use cases across consumers, smart cities, transportation, retail & more, I have come to believe that end users expect less of “a platform” approach and want more of  “a solution” approach. An offering that is tightly integrated from the end device/thing to the client/application and everything in-between from edge to cloud, offered as a service with one neck to choke, is the need of the hour. Be it the likes of ‘ring’ on the consumer IoT side or the likes of ‘Samsara’ on the enterprise/industrial IoT side, they are all disrupting the market with a tightly integrated and well supported end to end IoT solutions - and it's resonating with the end users.
  2. Focus on operational excellence and performance as a feature: This is something I have personally encountered, heard over and over from customers. Sizzling or cool features with IoT is not top of mind while knowing that the end device (even with limited functionality) works well, securely and consistently is imperative. A number of IoT solutions have been built keeping the sizzle in mind and very few are ready for the onslaught as the number of devices in the field increase exponentially. Having a pulse on the IoT system, knowing the health of the devices, being able to quickly diagnose root cause of an issue and delivering the much needed SLA (Service Level Agreement) should be among the key focus areas for IoT companies.

This is my pulse on the IoT market as it stands today. I am sure we will learn with every passing day and course correct ourselves to meet the needs of the customers. In whatever job and capacity I work in the coming year, I will be striving hard to focus on at least one of the above two, if not both.

I look forward to the impact the IoT industry can jointly create to solve tier 1 problems. Cheers to 2019 !!

Great insights Anoop. I personally believe that IoT more closely resembles a business model implementation than a linear solution that supports the business. Focusing on both E2E vertically integrated solutions and operational and performance excellence creates the mutual reinforcement that is needed to make the business model a success.

Hi Anoop...In this time of year, I take the opportunity to travel out of the country/US to refresh for the holidays, connect with family and gain new perspectives. Last year, I shared thoughts on IoT with several of the mobile carriers in Asia. This week, I had the chance to do the same but this time with financial institutions. Core to these conversations is identifying and delivering to the key business value, and even more so when reliable connectivity is not always guaranteed.....now you can try to guess which country I am at when at times I get a download speed of less than 1 Mbps.
