Interesting Digital Health Devices of 2019
Here are 17 innovative health technology devices that I see having potential application in an integrated healthcare ecosystem (i.e. not just stand alone shiny gadgets) In the interest of brevity I have not fleshed out use cases.
The 17 amuse-bouche sized descriptions across 5 fairly arbitrary classes are below (with links to more information in the blue headers if you feel I have been stingy with the copy)
Heart Health
Similar to the Apple watch this baby can detect Atrial Fibrillation but its not expensive AF... (costing 1/3 of the Apple model)
Omron HeartGuide – Blood Pressure Watch
Watch your blood pressure now ?? Like a routine BP test in a doctors office, yet worn continuously on the wrist. As blood pressure varies throughout the day, useful for patients to see if their blood pressure is well managed (and of course obsess about it)
This vest claims to predict heart attacks via continuous assessment of 6 physiological parameters, using embedded sensors. Just remember not to have a heart attack on laundry day.
Environmental Sensors & Support
Particulate about air quality at home? Air sensors are not new but becoming more sophisticated at tracking a range of indoor pollutants, including Carbon Monoxide, Ozone, Nitrogen Dioxide and Particulate Matter as well as Carbon Dioxide
The name reminiscent of a Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem, this remote vital sign monitoring device can also call for help if a fall is detected
Nope its not a power tool. Well a medical one of sorts. A companion robot that can ‘look out’ for an elderly person, watch out if they fall and call help and dispense their medications
Sleep
Teaching grandma to suck EEGs? A sleep mask that monitors brainwaves and helps train your brain to improve your sleep, claiming to speed up falling asleep and reduce frequency of awakenings
Phillips SmartSleep Snoring Band
Chest band that alerts you when you are on your back and gives you a gentle vibration to get you on your side and thus less likely to snore. There must be a simpler solution ?? Anyone for tennis balls?
From Zen to Z's. This head worn band uses guided meditation to lull you into slumber and tracks your brain activity when you get to the land of nod.
Think you have Sleep Apnea? Its all on your head mate. This miniature device packs a sleep lab into a small device that sticks to your forehead during sleep. It measures body position, aka % time on your back, number of stopped breathing events (Apneas) and average blood oxygen levels.
Relax
Rod Stewart could have done with one of these when he sang 'Rhythm of My Heart'. Doppel beats to your heart's rhythm to help you chill
Ok a bit of a Doppel-ganger. Haptic vibrations are emitted at various intensities from 2 watch sized devices, worn on each wrist to help you relax
And Some More Tech...
ReSound Linx Quattro Smart Hearing Aid
Want to tune out annoying co-workers? This hearing aid uses AI to learn about user preferences and their environment. It can tune out extraneous noise and dial up specific conversations or TV shows
Oh such a gentle and friendly sounding name. These smart glasses can monitor posture, alerting the user to correct it via a smart phone app. Useful to remind us when we are hunched over our smartphones developing 'TechNeck'
Who says AI can't have empathy? Chatbot that gives breast cancer patients support around treatment and improving their quality of life
Version 2.0 of this drug free pain device just got a big shot in the arm. It is smaller than v1.0 and the makers claim it is significantly more powerfulL'Oréal on Acid
The importance of being alkaline. This wearable measures skin pH levels to detect the acidity in sweat. L'Oreal claim skin acidity is important in conditions such as eczema. Seems like there is some literature to support this.
Anything else exciting I have missed?
