Tim Cafferty: What is the state of the industry and OTAs at this point?
Steve Milo: The state is that it's changing more than most sector analysts predicted. So, I think analyst insiders always want to tell you, “Here is who is the winner, here is who is the loser.”
The problem with the alternative lodging space is it is very dynamic. So, five years ago we would have said HomeAway, TripAdvisor, maybe Airbnb as the winners. Now, we don't even talk about TripAdvisor vacation rentals. And today, there is no guarantee that Expedia/HomeAway will even be a dominant player five years from now.
It is certainly not clear with Booking.com and Airbnb and Google and even companies like Amazon coming into the alternative lodging space who is going to be on top.
So, it's a very, very dynamic industry, in part, because it's an immature sector. And, because technology is driving so many aspects of change. Google being the one of the biggest, but certainly I wouldn't count out Amazon and the impact they could have on the vacation rental sector.
