Regret, almost always, is about failing to have the courage to speak up and/or speak your truth. Failures of either courage or kindness result in experiencing regret. “I wish I had said this instead” or “I wish I hadn’t said it that way” the most common regrets we have in day to day living. They get bigger from there.
Regret, basically means “I wish I had the courage to …..”
It is impossible, and immature, to insist we must “Live without Regrets” or to “Regret Nothing” as is often romanticized, and to also be able to grow and evolve as a person honestly. Regret motivates us to make better choices for ourselves in the future, than we did in the moment of time we didn’t know better. To make choices that are more aligned with our true values, what we’ve learnt, and our progression and evolution as a human being. The feeling generated through regret lets you know there is something you need to do, bigger than you are currently, that will take you to a different place than you were before. A better place.
The pursuit of ego comfort, external validation, or social conformity that overrides your own heart felt urges will ultimately result in regrets too. But, that’s just learning being made available to you. It’s what you do with regret that counts. Not that it exists.
Do not waste a perfectly good regret. What’s waiting for you in 2018? Have the courage - Say it, do it, be it.
