2018: the Year of the Dog (and Compliance)
When I was a kid, we had cats. I was given my first kitten, Princess, for my 5th birthday.
I love cats, I loved them curling up on my lap, purring, happy and content.
One day my Dad and I were discussing anxiety, he said, the trick is to be like a cat. Cats can go from fast asleep to wide awake in a split second and then back to sleep almost as quickly.
When we're anxious, we wake up, we don't go back to sleep, we toss and turn, ponder and panic. Be like a cat he says.
Why does the cat wake up? She is looking to see if there is a dog, checks there isn't and goes back to sleep. She doesn't pace around, searching in case a dog is hiding around the corner.
Don’t let compliance be your dog in 2018. Don’t be scared of it. Don't lose sleep over it. Compliance is a framework to deliver an excellent, risk free service to your clients. It’s not a stick to hit you with. Sure, there are consequences for non-compliance, but that shouldn’t be the reason to engage with it, it’s because it will help you.
We’re holding our annual Compliance Conference on the 26th April in London.
2018 is a significant year for Law Firm Compliance. The new AML regulations have been introduced, a revised Code of Conduct from the SRA is scheduled for later in the year and of course the GDPR is looming large.
We are focusing this year’s conference on supporting law firms of all sizes to decipher the coming changes and understanding what the practical implications for their law firms will be. Full conference itinerary to be confirmed, but will include:
- Top Tips sessions on all three key areas of change - GDPR, AML and Code of Conduct, providing attendees with a summary of the key changes and practical steps to take back to their law firm.
- Coalface Case Studies - Panel discussion of experts exploring the issues arising from ‘real life’ case studies.
- Cyber crime - 2018 trends and how to mitigate risk
