2017 Southern Conference champions
Miami Dade College Athletics has yet another reason to celebrate this season, as our Lady Sharks volleyball team became the 2017 Southern Conference champions earlier this month and is now gearing up for the state finals this weekend.
After their win against Indian River State College on Oct. 17, the team is now 24-0, 6-0 in conference play and number one in Florida and the nation. The team will travel to Bradenton Nov. 3-5, looking for yet another victory at the 2017 FCSAA State Volleyball Tournament. Click here for live coverage.
Several players have received special recognition throughout the season for their performance, including Sun Wenting, who was named Player of the Week at the Southern Conference. Player Massiel Matos was named NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Volleyball Player of the Week on Oct. 31, and player Camila Hernandez made the Dig 25 Club after facing Polk State College on Oct. 21. Players Thais De Castro Andrade and Tiziana Baumrukova received nominations for honors.
This season's victories mirror the team's outstanding performance last year, when they wrapped up a stellar undefeated post-season by bringing home their ninth NJCAA Volleyball National Championship title.
Congrats to the team for an outstanding performance, and a special thanks to Lady Sharks Head Coach Origenes "Kiko" Benoit and his colleagues for their commitment and hard work.
Best of luck at the state finals, and Go Sharks!
