Disaster Recovery is So 2015
Did you come up with your New Year’s I.T. Resolution for 2016 yet?
Yah, me either.
Let’s make one. Let’s come up with a single, easy-to-implement change that would have a significant impact on the success of our businesses.
Well, it is Winter. And TSeed is in the Northeast – so that means snow. Apparently it also means snow in Texas – they just had a blizzard. And flooding in Missouri. [Link: Crazy Weather]
Power outages happen. Floods happen. Disasters happen. And, like all good businesses, we have a Disaster Recovery plan that we can dust off when things don’t go our way.
But . . . why wait until a disaster forces you to recover? Why not plan to avoid the disaster altogether? Heck – let’s work through the disaster!
Wait! I feel a New Year’s Resolution coming on!
For 2016, let’s rip up our Disaster Recovery (DR) plan and replace it with a better option: a Business Continuity Plan!
Now that’s smart! While the power’s still on, let’s put a plan together to avoid this whole disaster thing.
And guess what? It’s easy. : )
I’m slightly oversimplifying, but there are tools and services available that will replicate your local servers to cloud-based servers every few minutes. You’ll always have an exact copy (a few minutes old) of your server and your data outside of your building (and likely outside of your region) waiting to be used. If disaster strikes – your building floods and your server is toast – you simply tell your computer to look for the server at a new location (the cloud location) and you’re off and running.
But for most of us, how often are disasters a reality? Unless we’re using the term very loosely, the “disasters” we face are more than likely “inconveniences.” And this is where Disaster Recovery becomes Business Continuity. The “switch” from your local server to the cloud replica can happen so fast, that your business can continue functioning through even a minor two hour “inconvenience.”
Now that’s a New Year’s Resolution! “I pledge to give my business the ability to not just survive, but work through nearly any outage, long or short term.”
That’s business continuity, and it’s ready for your business today.
